Me and some friends have rented a house in the keys for a week in the end of march. I'm bringing a kayak and my polespears i used when I live in puerto rico a few years ago. Do you have to be 3 mile's offshore to use a pole spear? And what kind of fish can I expect to see in the 30ft range? I will be staying on Key Colony which is about 30miles north of key west.

any info will be appreciated,..thanks!

tgb85,

3 miles on the Atlantic side and 9 miles on the Gulf side gets you out of State waters. See the attached link to FL law. I think you are south of Long Key but check it out. Also check all the new MPAs around the lights.

You could see grouper, snapper & hogfish most likely.

Thanks alot chad, I was looking for a link with the laws and everything that tells me everything I need to know. I will be staying south of Long Key, so I should be alright. Does anyone know if lobster season is open in march? Also what does MPA's stand for? Also, since Im south of Long key, does that mean I do not have to go the 3miles off to pole spear?

Lobster season is through March 31st. Be sure to buy a salt water fishing license and lobster stamp.

See this link. http://myfwc.com/marine/regulation.htm

Yes, if you're south of Long Key you have no worries about shooting in state waters.

Marine Protection Areas.

Good Luck!
