I just got a pole spear from my uncle. I live in RI near newport. I am not sure how to use it/where to use it. ANYTHING you can tell me about it would help me out IMMENSLY! Thanks!

"Where", I can't help you with but "How" is easy. Put your dominent hand through the rubber band and use the other one to shove the spear down stretching the rubber as far as you can and hold on with dominent hand. Surface dive. Get down to the bottom, grab a rock or something to hold yourself in place, keep your face hidden for about 20 seconds. Slowly peek up and if you see a fish that's big enough and near enough (like within 5-8 feet?) slowly reach out with the spear, point your index finger at the fish and open your hand.
Good hunting, brother,

Where do you hold the rubber band in your hand? i heard you put it in the middle skin between your thumb and pointer finger. One more question, how long should you be able to hold your breath for?

That's correct. It's called the web of your thumb. How long? Well, figure that you descend about 3' per second. So, if you're diving in 30' of water, you need 10 seconds to get down, 10 seconds up, 20 seconds hiding. If you can do a minute and a half breath-hold, that gives you almost another whole minute to look around and spot a fish. Don't plan on shooting something every dive, after all. And I'd wait at least five minutes between dives.

What Oldsarge said. Polespears are a ton of fun. I hunt with spearguns mostly, but every now and again I still go back to a simple polespear, it's like going back in time for me. so much fun! here is the report on my last polespear hunt:

A couple tips, hook the band across the back of the hand, not over the thumb side. There's a huge difference in strength this way.
Also give the pole a slight twist to keep it from bowing, especially if it's a flexible fiberglass polespear.

Chad

What sarge and chad said is correct but also add non-slip tape on the shaft of the polespear. I use what I call grippy tape (non-skid that is applied to stairs) and others use friction tape. That way you can keep your hand in the ready-to-shoot position on the shaft without losing any power due to slippage.

The Manny Puig pole spear is $179.00 US at www.spearfishinggear.com. I think it comes with a case and a tip.

Cheers,
Chris

P.S. I completely deleted what I previously posted because it was in the wrong spot. Don't know what happened, think I was redirected here after logging in.

Hi aesop. Unfortunately I dont think I can answer any of your questions. But rest assured in the next few days you are going to know the answers to any thing you want, that's Deeper Blue! Any how welcome & enjoy.

any videos of people using a pole spear to fish?

These might help explain the entire situation?

im just getting started in spearfishing myself, but with a speargun, so i cant tell you much on how to use a spear. i can help you out in the where part. RI waters are great for spearfishing, no feds breathing down your neck, no sorts of crazy sanctuaries or protected ground. the waters are open to really any kind of water sport you can think of and spearfishing is allowed literally anywhere. send me a PM if you want to find out specific spots, i know a few good ones.

Just some advice I wish someone had given me when I started... The most important tip I learned was to pin the fish against the bottom or a rock right after hitting it. Unless your shot is perfect, the fish has a good chance of shaking off. If I have enough breath in me, I always reach forward and grab the fish (under the gills) to pull it firmly on the spear before going up with it in my hand. It should become a reflex-- shoot, pin the fish, reach forward and grab it. I've never used a barbed tip, which might be easier.
