Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I suspect that you will get Crist, Omer Manny Puig, Riffe carbon and Gat-Ku as standard responses.

To get more specific about what might be best for you, what application are you looking to use it for?

Reef or blue water?
Want speed or "punch"?
Target species?
What is your grip-strength like?
Length of spear desired?

I personally LOVE my 8' foldspear and use it whenever I'm in spearable waters and even without a tip to fend off large predators.

I've yet to shoot anything big with it yet though... so can't comment on how it handles 20+ lb fish.

Ah!
I guess what I meant was there are times when I would like to leave the speargun behind and just fish with a pole spear.
an all rounder 8 ft sounds right, I was looking at some ebay postings and 7 ft was the length which I thought would have been ok.
I will actually try to get a machine shop here in To or Mtl to make me one.
Tks

If you are only using it for reef work, the biggest issue is a grouper holing up with the spear and bending / snapping it. An interchangeable front section addresses this.

2 ways around it - go carbon and use the flex to absorb the torque... Or go big and heavy and resist the bending.

For blue water stuff, a big / heavy hitting spear might be better suited - something like the puig or crist.

If you are planning on blue water, you'll need a float, so instead of a detachable slip-tip, consider tying the band like the Manny Puig knot to attach to a floatline / float.

Do you think a machine shop will be able to make one well, for less than $200? The Gat-Ku will be $150ish and the Puig $225 or so. I'd rather not reinvent the wheel, considering replacement shafts are readily available.

For polespear gloves, look into madgrip gloves available online or Rona / home depot, etc. Simply the best / most grippy, allowing you to use a heavier band for more power, or with hand less fatigue.

Good point mate, as a metallurgist, I had a few ideas on how to improve on weight and accompanying velocity, combination of Inco, Ti etc...reduced diameter and all that.
I hear you and will most definitely heed your advice.

If its a project or attempt at a better mousetrap - hey - I get it!!

:D

But at the end of the day, they aren't exactly high-tech pieces of equipment. It's a pointy stick with a rubber band on the end. :D

I think the factors are diameter, weight, length, strength and cost.

Cost is a big factor in commercially available spears, as they need to sell decent volume to turn a profit. If you can make one in a superior fashion, at the same cost... Then bonus!

I think that a 4-pc (each 2 ft) would add a lot of strength and improve portability.

Indeed a sucker is born everyday A \Ti/W front end with Inco pieces filled with Pb core to improve CofG n maintain true aim..we shall see. I have a few ideas and if It makes design sense I can make 2 and throw u 1

Awesome idea! Talk about optimization!!

Super-expensive NASA-type materials combined with dirt-cheap fishing weight material! I love it!

Everyone else just compromises and averages things out, but just like a tuned golf club shaft, I'm sure there are balance, feel and MOI benefits to a custom haute couture pole spear.

HAhahaha pays to work in the metallurgical industry...all my shafts r Ti....generally scrap from the aeronautical folks
