This old man was living alone in his house after his wife died. They found his partialy mumified body in a chair infront of a tv that was still on. The only reason they found him was because they were investigating a broken pipe:head

You would think the neighbors would check on him or the power company after not paying bills :(
poor guy

What a horrible fate! Condemned to watch TV, 24 hours a day, even after death, what kind of Hell would that be? Shudder!!

Poor guy
you would of thought that the electric and gas comany would call round to see why hes not paying his money, thats a fist that they come round and try to take his stuff

you all understand that he was dead, right?
poor guy means nothing, his body may have been there for a year but he wasn't. its not like he was frustrated or suffering because no one was shutting off the soap operas.

you could say poor plumbers for walking in and finding a corpse. or poor whoever needs to sell that house, 'What happened to the previous owner? He was mummified in the living room, but it has great southern exposure.'

damn poor guy i'm surprised none of his relatives didn't call him or anything :S

Appearantly he didn't have any. His wife died several years ago and they don't seem to have had any children. See? Spend your life in front of the idiot box and everyone forgets you exist. Down with televisions, up with almost anything else. At least the internet members miss you if you don't log on once in a while.

You know, ............we have several previously avid members who have not come around in the past year. It there a chance that it was Sinkweight!!!

prob had automatic checking...lol
just think the power company probably got a years worth of his pension not to mention if he had cable tv ... wonder if the furnace was left running the water heater and lets not forget the fridge.

This case is rather old. In fact, I think it was the reason of Enron's bancrupcy.

It isn't THAT old... in fact, it was last week... It is just that stuff like this happens relatively often in Europe so people don't consider it THAT odd anymore.....

I have to say that, from the perspective of an Ami who has moved to Europe, the whole concept of "watch out for your neighbors" that I grew up with is absent in Germany. At least I know the people on the same floor of the building I live in and that is rather unusual. In our previous apartment, there were 7 apartments on one floor and we didn't know a single person other than by sight. When we would say "Hello" they would look at us like we had horns and three eyes.

Oh, this is so TRUE. The thing is, all of the western society is changing to be that way, and this is really sad :(

Or maybe I'm just getting old and miss "the good old days" :p

Reminds me of an old ireland before a reasonable amount of prosperity and technology took over. There are repeated instances of when in my parents time the phones all went through an exchange usually at the local post office so they would ring the operator and ask to be put through to sligo 352 or etc because it was a local post office as the exchange the operator would often come back and say to you " oh theres no point in trying them they are away shopping or up at her sisters house etc". That day is certainly gone and no harm maybe but we probably have gone too far over the other way to the extent that we no longer know our neighbours to any great extent

Well, I did not hear about such case in Europe, but remember another one in the USA, where a woman died in 2003 and was found in front of her TV two and half years after that: Woman's mummified body found - Peculiar Postings - MSNBC.com

As for Germany - I would not equal Germany to Europe. I've been living in Germany for 7 years. Germans are indeed very closed, and difficult to approach, but once you break the hard envelope, the relation is much stronger and more reliable (although rarely too emotive). They respect privacy, but in spite of never showing their emotions, or trying to pretend some (as it is often the case in other countries), they do care about their neighbors possibly more than others.

It IS sad. My Wife & I have moved in with her grandparents (both 85 yrs), mostly to help them exit this life with as much dignity and comfort as possible. They are both housebound, and require a lot of assistance; I could easily see this sad picture being their end. :( It's terrible how easily we brush aside and ignore our elders, especially as they get "quirky". But the rewards of being here are pretty great - my daughter will always remember her "Grammy" & "Pop"! :)

Definitely a good action Lockedin! Apart from the help and confort you are giving, grandparents are magical beings for their grandsons :)

Unfortunately I saw an article yesterday saying that here in Spain there's an average of 94 elderly persons a year who pass away in solitude.

When I was a teenager and lived in Abilene, TX. an elderly man died in his front yard and was not discovered for almost a year due to the high grass in his yard. After muliply attempts by the city to contact him about the condition of his high grass in his yard, the city decided to cut it for him and send him a bill. That's when they discovered him. Wasn't much left but a skeleton and clothes. I assume the bugs and maggots ate him up pretty fast. Very large front yard, but I still don't see how the neighbors didn't smell a rotting corpse. It was front page news back then! :D

Well I heard Texans have big yards, a few thousand acres, that might explain it.

It is sad indeed. I blame society in general we can't leave our front doors unlocked anymore, people will pass by if they see an incident, very sad. we are always taught to keep a check on your neighbours but its not just the younger generation who are guilty though. We have an 85 year old neighbour who hardly talks to us. We just had a cold snap up North, snow and everything and she didn't come to see if we were okay!!

It might just be laziness though not just that she doesn't care, she didn't even take in her milk for the last two weeks!!
