Power Lung?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.

Anyone use one of these. I heard a couple guys lasting over 5 mins with this thing in the routine. I am VERY new, and 3 minutes seems impossible. Do these things work?
 
If the power lung works or not I do not know, but I can say that if you are VERY new you will gain more from training holding your breath than using that device. It may be useful to train your "breathing muscles" but if you want to hit five minutes you need to train to hold your breath first. I do not think it will take long until you reach three minutes if you put some time in training apnea.

If the powerlung device works, which i think is very possible, it should preferably be put on top of your regular training. Using the powerlung alone will not get you that much further. Or that is at least what i think.
 
Yeah I agree with perow1.

Since you are very new I would suggest doing some tables and really pushing yourself in your breath holds. You have a mental block to pass.

You can go ahead and train with that but its not going to give you the confidence or keep your interest in breath holding I think. When I started training I was always trying to beat my last time. I always felt great after beating my last static time that it kept my interest up.

Just my thoughts on the manner, everyone trains differently. :)
 
I don't know how effective the powerlung is but you could just breath through a pen cap with a hole at the end instead. I saw this on a television special on Patrick Musimu's 209 m dive, he said that the pen cap is just as effective as other expensive devices. You might want to try that before investing in a device that might end up collecting dust after a few weeks.

But, like the others on here mentioned, you will pass 3 minutes in no time if you just stick to regular training.
 
I was in the same boat about a year ago in that 3 minutes seemed far far away. However, once I hit the 3 min mark by mostly just learning to relax my statics started shooting up like crazy.

If you've got the cash and time to spare then try the powerlung out and give us a review, but simply learning to relax and have fun with your breath holds will probably yield the best results.
 
Trouble with the power lung is that it is boring and gets grubby if you cant be bothered to clean it. I used one for a while breathing 20 minutes at a time while driving to work. It didnt seem like a waste of time then. I found it the other day in my glove box but didnt fancy putting it in my mouth. Thought I might put in on ebay.

There have been many threads on the Power Lung and similar devices. I think that it might be helpful, but tolerance tables and fitness training will produce much better results.
 
I have posted about this recently on my journal. My favorite training with these devices is to use them during cycling or calisthenics. I use the expand-a-lung device for this.

It works well on a number of levels. Your diaphram and intercostals get a good workout. The CO2 builds up quickly so it's good for training your tolerance. It also requires you to stay focused and take long-deep breaths instead of short-shallow breaths that we naturally use while exerting ourselves. You may also consider getting a center-mounted snorkel and putting some tape over the top to cover about 90%. This gives you the same effect during water-training.

Needless to say, I really like these things. Though I agree that tables are the first thing to work on, there is no reason you shouldn't try to incorporate different types of training into your routine. Variation tends to keep me motivated. If I had to do tables every day I surely would not have made it this far without buring out.
 
Thanks guys! I started with the tables, i can already see a little increase. I know practice makes perfect. I am really trying to do all this for a career change. I want to be a PJ, and I dont stand a chance right now!!! Well ill be checking in, and once again thanks for all the info!!!
 
I have one and used to use it back when I used to dive alot. Now that I am getting back into the swing of things I might break it out again. One thing I remember was that you have to put a clip on your nose which gets uncomfortable after a while. Also you really build a bunch of saliva, at least I did, so you do not want to whip it out of your mouth in a crowd. I would like to drive to work with it, but i am afraid it is too heavy not to support it with one hand, and I need two to drive safely. Also the attention you would get from othr drivers could cause an accident:)
