Hi - I love this site -and the way everyone is so collaborative making sure that all can enjoy htis sport.

I have got myself booked on a freediving course in May and I really want to get the best out of this session. Has anyone got any suggestions on what I should do in terms of preparation. I already do Yoga and hope that is going to help my breathing but any more suggestions would be really welcome.

Thanks in advance.

To prepare:

Take string. You never know when you need string.

I guess it also depends on the course level you are going to do. If its something like a ** or equivilant, a major part is correct breathing techniques, which from doing yoga, you should find easy!

Hey Tessa

I think its our course you are coming on... so...

I'd say at this stage, don't worry too much about freediving. Make sure you are reasonably fit - so do some running/biking etc at the gym, yoga will also help a lot but most of all make sure you are happy in the water - so go swimming a few times. If you want to practise finning, take a kick board and get your finning legs working straight. If you want to try a monofin on the course, then practise some dolphin style kicks as well.

I'll send you some more info nearer the time

(and don't worry if you don't manage to do any of the above, you'll still have a great time and learn a lot!)

see you then

Sam

..and Ducttape, cable ties and a Leatherman™ (or other quality foldable tool). Absolutely essential whenever one leaves home.

Have fun on the course! :D

And a box of matches, never know when you mite have to start a fire.

Other than what was said Id say also make sure you feel comfortable when wearing your kit, nothing puts you off sinc like fins chafing or a mask leaking...

Thanks all for your advice - I have started coating my matches in wax as per my girl guide camping trips, and will always carry a piece of string - LOL.

Yes Sam it is your course and I swim 3-4 miles a week so that is OK. I was just wondering what else I could try to make sure I got the best out of the weekend. SO I'll focus my yoga on breathing and finning. I don't have a monofin (yet - dying to try one) so I probably wont panic about the dolphin kick.

Thanks everyone.

Tessa
