Hey Everyone!

I just bought a Mares Explorer 75 Speargun but so far i haven't been able to try it. (Just bought it today)

I have used other spearguns before but these where quite old so i had no problems with the rubber. It seems that the Mares Explorer 75 Speargun rubber is quite tight and i cannot manage to load it or extend it near the loading area. Do you have any ideas of how i can losen it a little bit?

I tried pulling it as hard as i can with no sucess. I am quite new to this type of sports so i need your help!

Also it has Three types of settings - S, 1 and 2.

I am aware that these are S: SAFE, 1: NORMAL TRIGGER ACTION, 2: SHORT TRIGGER ACTION

Not quite sure that 1 and 2 really mean.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have managed to load it after using lots of energy! Phew!

My friend tells me i should get softer rubber but this has the original Mares Rubber so i guess it should do.

Should i leave it loaded for some time so the rubbers losens a bit?

YES, leave it loaded for a day or 2 (BUT IN A SAFE PLACE WHERE IT COULD NEVER HURT ANYONE OR ANYTHING!!) it should do the trick. You could also buy softer rubbers, you will have to do so at one point in time as mares rubbers are not sold very commonly, might as well take your time while you have the original ones to select the best alternative. I will name a few for you (in no particular order):
Cressi G 20
omersub
Picasso (has some of the best bands)
Beuchat
or bulk rubber

depending on the shaft thickness you are using you could vary the rubbers from 16mm, 18mm, 19mm or 20mm.
you could find a lot of information on rubbers if you try the search function of the forums.

Also do you have any idea what these mean please:

S: SAFE, 1: NORMAL TRIGGER ACTION, 2: SHORT TRIGGER ACTION

Just back home! I bought a softer Beuchat rubber and it did the trick! Thanks!

I also bought a Beuchat wishbone. It seems much more secure then the Mares Wire Wishbone.

In my opinion you should not leave a loaded speargun anywhere for any length of time! They are very powerful weapons which are designed to be used underwater. Aside from the safety issues posed to any living organisms the trigger mechanism probably won't enjoy enforced tension of this type and you'll probbaly just end up damaging it. Use 'softer' rubbers by all means but please refrain from leaving a loaded speargun in storage, however safe you think it is.

Thank you for your comments. However i bought a softer rubber (Beuchat) and i still need to use a lot os energy to load! The mares rubber is almost impossible!

Does it load easier underwater?

Are you wearing a wetsuit? It is easier to load from a comfort point of view if you do not load directly onto bare skin. Even a neoprene vest will suffice. Does the spear have 2 notches? You might find it easier to load the wishbone onto the first notch, rest, then pull onto second notch. What thickness are the rubbers? If they are 20mm then try 17mm or 16mm. Eventually, through repetition, you will build the strength needed to load rubbers. Try doing chin-ups at home, it is a good exercise for strengthening the 'loading' muscles. Have fun.

I load on bear skin. The thickness of the rubbers are 17mm. Also the spear has 2 notches. I never made it to the last notch lol.

Also i noted that on both rubbers bands i have once loaded, from the bottom part they moved a little. Like they slided from the grip. Is that normal?

As the rubbers are 'stretched' then they appear to not fit the screw-in areas which are probably plastic; so this is normal, yes. When loading do not pull your hand apart, keep them as close to the barrel as possible. This saves the wishbone and also makes it easier to load. On dry land try pulling the bands back but without the spear locked in, i.e.take the spear out all together. Do sets like you would in a gym and you will develop strength in the right muscles. A wetsuit or vest makes it much easier underwater too.

Probably refers to trigger sensitivity i.e. Position 1 is normal but on Position 2 the trigger is more sensitive which means gun will fire more quickly and require less pull on the trigger to do so. I would stick to position 1 until you get lots of experience in the water with it then try position 2.

Just to keep everyone update. The Mares Explorer 75 loads quite easily underwater and it is still very powerful!

On disatvantage when huting in rocks is that the Tripod Stab got all damaged with the impacts. Need to replace with a bullet which is more accurate and powerful but less hitting ratio.
