when I'm starting or replying to a thread the toolbar isnt working so when I submit it everything gets compressed together. Any ideas? I can still submit threads but I'll have to stick to paragraph form- lists etc don't work

What browser do you use? Is JavaScript enabled? If not, turn it on. If you are on MS Internet Explorer and have JavaScript and other active options disabled for safety reasons (which is very wise and I do it always), add the deeperblue.net domain to the Trusted Sites zone in IE safety settings.
thanks trux, I did try preview and edit of thread, no tools seem to work, probably a problem on my end, I'll try out your suggestions
It looks indeed like disabled active scripting in browser settings. If you do not manage activating it in your main browser, try installing an alternative one - for example Firefox or Opera.
Alternatively, you can always enter the formatting code manually (similarly like in phpBB forums). You do not need functional active scripting - simply enter the tags into your text as you type. The list of applicable tags is available here:

thanks for the help, I'll try the codes, using my parents computer these days(PC), very used to mac, and it's a crappy dial-up connection via aol, saved up for a new mac but ended up spending it on a freedive course.
