Hey guys and gals,

I don't like to dwell on the negative, but I am curious as to whether any of you have had problems with Specialfins.

My sob-story:

End of March 2005 I ordered two custom sized monofins. They arrive a month later, both ten centimeters too short (I had provided clear instructions). I contacted Jyri to have them replaced. I said I could send them back to him if he wanted, but he declined. He said he'd replace them. More than four months later (in late August/early September) I had been sending Jyri emails but no response for weeks at a time. When he would respond he would assure me that the fins had been sent. Then nothing for weeks. Finally, I explained that the whole freediving season in chilly Canada was over and still I had not received any monofin that I could actually use. The fins I did have were so short they look like kid fins! :duh I aked Jyri if he could track the package but he said he couldn't. I suppose he sent it by mail?

I got angry and asked for a refund. Jyri apologized and said the money would be wired to me shortly. Never heard from him for a few weeks until he said that his manager wouldn't issue a refund without tracking the package. Uh...so he didn't think to do that in May? Why didn't he mention that first when I had asked for a refund....Then after that no response at all...

Someone else I know ordered a fin from Specialfins this month. It arrived today, wrong footpocket size.

Someone else I know ordered a fin for a world record attempt in March. No fin.

Anyone know if Specialfins is having business issues that would prevent them from providing reasonable customer service?

I've heard some people are getting what they order from Specialfins. Despite that, given my frustrating experience, I would not recommend Specialfins.

I can understand that businesses can go through hard times, but when they don't explain what's going on, ignore emails, or fail to offer a strategy to correct the problem, it is pretty disappointing.

I'm still out 260 Euro or whatever.... :rcard

On the bright side, I ordered a monofin from Waterway and it arrived in 4 days! And it was much, much cheaper! :inlove Also, looking at the manufacturing for the Specialfins monofin and the Waterway, I have to say that the Waterway is a far surperior fin, far better crafted.

Anyone have info about Specialfins or similar stories?

My specialfin arrived just fine and within reasonable time. Then I ordered some socks and a sticker for my fin and that too arrived fine. Not to mention Jyri was polite to answer all of my beginner (at the time) questions and help me choose a fin.

I can only recommend those guys.

My experience was all good, fast reliable and very friendly.
I can second Vlado and recommend them.

Hi.
I had also a "problem" with a carbon medium omer.
They send me the mono in 4 weeks, good, but i tryed the mono and i didn't like it at all,it was like no moving.Jury told me he can't to change it,but he ofered other mono for 100 euros,i was sending lots of emails for buying the new mono without answer.....
Now i have a Leaderfins Flyer, cheaper, one week deliver, and it is the best mono i have tryed. The first day in the pool i increased my PB in 20 meters.

Hiya

I have two sets of specialfins hybrids. When i purchased them, the service i received, was EXCELLENT. I received the same service when i bought the second pair of hybrids.

When i purchased the first pair, i asked Jyri to make it fit a Picasso footpocket, as the Omer footpockets are too narrow for my feet. My fins arrived and i fitted them to my picaaso pockets. they were a tad bit too small and i needed to sicaflex then to the fin. After a few trips, the sides pulled lose. I then ordered Omer footpockets. Since the Picasso pocket has only one screw holding the blade, i had to drill another 2 holes so that they'd fit in the omer footpockets. Blades fitted very well in the footpockets.

A couple of dives later, the blade SNAPPED at the place where the screw holes were. I spoke to Jyri, who told me that they'll cover it and replace me with another set of fins.

That was more than a year ago. Numerous emails and pm's later, i simply gave up. I ended up giving the other set away, since the Omer footpockets hurt my feet very badly.

Definitely not a happy customer!! :rcard :rcard :rcard

miles

I have had really good experiences with them - and so have lots of people I sent to them - but I know Jyri has been hard to get hold of recently so maybe there is something up. Stephan might know as he has a dealer deal with them.....

I bought three fins from them and had no problems either - I found Jyri really polite and helpful so I am sad to hear that standards have slipped. Also I love the fins.

As an aside, does anyone know what type of monofins the Molchanovas use?

From the look and from the common uniformity of Russian finswimmers, I'd guess those are made by Andronov. Except that they are expensive I don't know much about them.

Thanks for sharing your stories, people. It is unfortunate that when there's a complication as in my case, and for miles and rafacuatic, customer service goes down the drain.

Jyri was always polite and helpful in his emails, but when real issues came up, he just wouldn't respond!

If anyone has a direct line to Jyri or anyone else at Specialfins who can contact those of us with outstanding problems, that would be a great help.

Hey does anyone know the relationship between Leaderfins, SebakFins, and SpecialFins?

I assumed that they were somehow all connected. Maybe they all use the same fin manufacturer? Sebak/Specialfins has merged? I remember when Jyri used to be with Sebak.

Is Leaderfins completely separate from Specialfins? They are located in the same town in Estonia and their websites are eerily similar.

Or am I just seeing things in desperation? :duh

Laminar,

My name is Ivan Fernandez and I am the Leaderfins representative in USA.

Originally there was Sebak fins and after a split Specialfins and Leaderfins were born, so both brands have their origins in Sebak.

You are right they also in the same city in Estonia, but Leaderfins is now completely a different brand. If you check the old models are very similar but if you check the new ones you will notice that each brands develop their own models.

One of the main ideas to have representatives in USA was exactly to provide a much closer customer service, because believe me dealing with the Postal service in Estonia and Bank transfers are not so easy if you compared with other countries in Europe.
I also represent other brands from Italy and Spain and it is easier to work with that countries.

If you think that you are seeing things in desperation, just send me an email and I would be glad to help you.

Cheers

Ivan

Hi Ivan,

Thanks for the info. I may be in touch with you about a monofin for purchase soon.

Pete

I bought Specialfins hybrid stereofins. Took 3 months to deliver. Wrong footpocket size. One of the blades was not properly constructed - resin is thin on the surface, carbon material sticks though, the fin bends incredibly at the center. I had hoped their "warranty" would cover manufacturing defects... Multiple e-mails later, no response. All I can do is RECOMMEND YOU DO NOT BUY SPECIALFINS. I wish someone had told me to walk past them as well...

Hrmmm so I ordered a monofin from Specialfins, directly from Kaarmo. He was very attentive replying all my emails before I ordered, answering all my questions about type, coloured, advices...etc.

However, once I paid, I have only heard from him twice, once, when he confirmed receiving my payment, and then another one more time when I asked to not stick the sticker yet, I'll stick it by myself....Then, after more than one month, I emailed to ask if my monofin is ready, no reply at all. And I've sent 4 emails now, still no reply.

So, I've pretended to order fins from another email, and boom, replied fast, like that time when I first inquire about the possibility to buy his monofin.

I wonder if I ever gonna get my fin or have I been conned? :(

Somebody in Estonia here that knows him? I'm very worried coz I am the kind who don't earn so much, and save for a long time for this monofin.

:(:(:(

Hi radziah,

I complained publicly on their facebook page (posted photos of my broken blade) and they resolved my problem. Replaced a broken fin with new ones.
...Maybe that can help you get their attention.

It is unfortunate their post-sale customer service falls apart, because I like their fins. Took me a year to get things sorted out though.
You probably have not been conned. Just be patient.

Thanks DinnerFish, at least your assurance made me feel less worried. I'll try to be patient, hopefully it will arrive without much problem. Their facebook page is not updated since 2012 now, so I send them a PM, as expected no response.

Why is it so hard to reply and say sorry, the production takes longer than expected and lift up the worries from customers, at least. No response made people feel like they are cheated or something. Then, when people want to order new stuff, they can response immediately. I wonder if this is the case of, business is out of money or something so he just get as much order and money first before producing the ordered fins. I regret now, should have ordered one from Leaderfins as they have representative here in Malaysia, which is my friend. I chose specialfins over them because of the type of fins that I wanted and the Omer footpocket that Leaderfins no longer carry.

:arghh::arghh::arghh:

Hi Radziah,

Hi Kars!

Thank you so much for your help! His email is actually Karmo instead of Karno (maybe just typo). Maybe you know him personally, and that'll be great help!

I hope for good news, thanks so much! :shame::shame::shame:
