I remember training as a DM in '96 i felt that really im not learning about diving but rather picking up slavery skils for the instructor and the students... judging by Jon's comments things didnt change ;)
but seriously, you need to be very patient (epsecially when you assist courses), very attentive especially around beginners... have good communication skills (you need to be able to explain everything in detail, ranging from boat briefing, to dive briefing, etc.. sometimes to foreigners)..organizational skills, to be able to pair up buddys of similar skill level together (as much as possible), make sure evyone is on time, make sure everyone is THERE and make a count before, during and after a dive...to me all those above wont work if you dont have the following skill, BE NICE AND PLEASANT!! remember the people youre with are doing this for Fun...
If you play your cards right, students will end up liking you and appreciating you more than the bossy instructor man ;) happened with me many times :)
