Hi everybody!
I'm just coming back from a fishing weekend that was not very succesfull but anyway despite the scarce catch it was a funny/frustrating experience... Here comes the main issue.
I started my fishing looking for Mahi mahi, but after about an hour not even a decent fish passed close to my fishing spot, I was a bit tired and to "unload" my gun I took a ridiculous sized pomfret (I mean ridiculous because you're not supposed to shoot a 2 pounds fish with a No Kai loaded on 3 rubbers... But that fish is damn tasty!) I jumped to the boat and changed from the blue to a rocky shallow bottom. I loaded my gun and started the quest for a nice piece of fish... After a few minutes I saw a very decent parrot fish (About 8-10 pounds) and started the chase, I had it on range and sight several times but always very close to the rocks and I didn't want to have my shaft damaged... It was an easy shot but I waited until I had it with good distance from the rocky wall... Finally it was on target, I squeezed the triger softly and I felt a very strong pull and saw the fish swiming away rofl almost mocking at me :vangry ... What the hell???!!!! It was on range, I aimed perfectly... And besides why I felt that ugly pulling?... The line was tangled!! And the last loop didn't unleashed from the front metal piece in the gun! What an stupid way of loosing a fish... I was pissed of by that and I also tought that if some day I misplace a shot like that on a big fish , the freeshaft sistem is not going to work and I may loose my gear :duh
I know that the question is not going to be easily answered, but any suggestion? It happened to me twice!! And I thought that I was loading it carefully... Obviously not! Is there any trick, or any tiny piece of information or step that I skipped? This is the second time that I use my Riffe, before that I always used crappy pieces of gun, so, I don't have a lot of background. I learned to load the gun with the video "Spearfishing 101... Gone to baja". Sometimes I shoot correctly and some times it gets tangled and acording to me I always load it the same way... But obviously not , and I'm doing something wrong... Any help will be greatly appreciated!!! :duh
... One more question... The captain in this last fishing trip told me that last week an spearo shooted a huge tuna, and that the wounded fish turned around him very very quikly and almost tangled him with the shaft line. That doesn't happen frequently and averybody was surprised by the reaction of the fish... And the great danger to the spearo. My question ...if tangled... How can you cut the monofilament. I don't know what kind of line is it, but the Riffe shafts lines can't be cutted fast with a knife... Actually, I think that a knife can't cut it at all! Let me know your toughts on that too. Isn't it safer to change to a nylon line? What pros and cons are implied on that?
Ok, that's all for today. Many regards from Mexico, I hope that next time I can place a good pic!
Adios amigos!
