hey, ive been doing breathing exercises for 2 days now, yeh, im newbie...but my first try i held for :40 seconds...ive looked at some techniques and im up to 1:30 on my 3rd day... i know that stinks, but im just begining and im wondering if thats a good increase.....tips please...im also 15 and would anyone have a idea on how long im capable of holding for? thanx

hey 1:30 is great progress. Don't work your way up too fast. Its important to let your body adjust and build tolerances to lack of air and tolerances to increased co2. Be happy with your progress and don't try to increase too fast. Spend more time reading the forum and learning all the different terminology and affects it can have on your body. 1st and foremost, always make sure you have a buddy watching that knows what to do in case of an emergency. Knowledge and patience is very important. Good luck!

You are capable of doin 5+ minutes on a static breath.
I did it last night
The key for me is to relax for a few minutes and to tolerate the pain,

You will feel your body go into "Contractions" its normal
Once they start they dont stop.
Mine start around 3 min, Just keep pushing it, Im hoping to work my way into 6:30 by end of summer, at the rate im going, i been adding 1 minute every 2 weeks,

Truthfully, Its not hard, I push my limits/try hard on 2 breaths a Day, thats all i do,

1)Relax
2)Exhale fully
3) inhale fully
4)exhale fully
5) Pack your lungs (Take the biggest breath you can take)
6) take your self into a differnt word,
7) you will have the urge to let air out, dont do it.

try it, your time will increase, mine did atleast

When I do statics, which is rarely, I do it in a shallow pool. Ill be with a friend, and Ill go down to 10 feet or however deep the pool is and stay there for 2-3 min. This is really good for me, and Ive been spearing for 12 years. I dont know how old you are, but a lot of your breath hold capacity will develop with age. If you are just going to be spearing from shore and stuff, the best way to progress is just going out and diving/spearing. Dive and just enjoy the fish, before you know it, youll be down there better and longer. I suck at static, its too boring, but when Im on the bottom, you can get into "the zone" easier. Just make sure you are with a buddy.
 
I'd discourage you from training statics in depth. The purpose of static training is pushing into your physiological limits, increasing your hypercapnic and hypoxic tolerance, accustoming to contractions, learning to relax, and to read your own body signals in different phases of the apnea. You can rarely do it safely in depth, even if it is just a few meters, and even if buddy is watching. The buddy cannot be in direct contact, may get easily distracted, and in case you get in troubles, the help may come late.

The best way to practices static training is in a shallow pool for kids. Lay on the surface face down - this position allows you to relax perfectly. Have your buddy clicking your hand (or taping your shoulder) regularly (every couple of seconds) and pulling you out immediately when you fail to respond to a repeated signal.

Here on DB, we hear regularly about fatal accidents of freedivers training at the bottom of the pool. Often they asked someone to keep an eye on them, but as we see it did not help. I remember for example the case of a Swedish freediver who dies in this way.
