Railgun maintenance

Hey everyone,

How do you maintain your euro/railguns?

This is what I am doing:

1. Pull spear out of handle (tripping line release)
2. Put whole thing in the shower
3. Wrinse with warm water thoroughly (especially handle)
4. Dry w/ towel then air dry
5. Wipe shaft/flopper/floatline clip down w/ WD40 (VERY SMALL AMOUNT)
6. Apply plastic cleaner/protectant (plexus) to barrel and external parts EXCEPT for handle
7. Store

sound good? I know I am a bit over doing it, but I want my railgun to last for a while

Sounds like your doing everything just fine. I just rinse mine off, squirt some w-d40 on the spear and throw it in the garage. I read your other thread also, If you decide to go with a breakaway, it is very easy/cheap to do a hawaiian breakaway, that way you dont have to drill a hole in your barrel. If you head to santa barbara and your hunting things bigger than calico, you have been blessed with an excuse to buy another bigger gun(I have three RA's ranging from 90 to 140) Congrats on your gun, sounds like you like it, and thats what counts.

Sounds good to me. I used to leave the spear in but the butt end started getting pretty rusty & I noticed salt sometimes built up at the barrel-handle joint, so I now take it out. I usually soak it in the bath for a few minutes and/or shower it down. I usually dry barrel down first then invert (to hopefully avoid salt build up in the trigger mech). I usually use cold water but a bit of warm water might get the salt out quicker/better.

After drying, I sharpen the spear tip with a mill bastard file. It cleans off any rust & dings & sharpens the point. Then lightly oil the whole spear with cooking oil - as I figure the whole spear often goes through the fish. I dry it out of the way in the corner of a room. Then store it in a cool, dry, airy place.

I'm not a fan of plastic cleaner/protectors (like Armor-all). I had a colleague once that did his car interior out with it every weekend. Very shiney interior -- but, turns out, car interiors are supposed to be matt so they don't cause reflections on the windscreen (it can be quite dazzling). Whatever floats your boat though.

I soak/rince all steel parts (trigger, shaft) with fresh water, spray WD40 on the shaft (WD=Water Displacer) because it's fast and easy and will prevent rust from moisture in the air. Make sure I get all the sand out of the trigger.
Then I stick an old sock on the bands to avoid uv deterioration if the bands can't be taken out, otherwise they go in a zip lock bag in the freezer, they last way longer that way.

About Plexus:

I use it on my motorcycle (2004 R1) and my helmet frequently. It is the only cleaner/protector that I have used that really works well and doesn't leave build up. It is great stuff, but kind of expensive. Good idea with the cooking oil.

lol I go through spears quicker than they can rust I only bother with my trigger mechs Make sure they are thoroughly rinsed and I give the trigger a little spray of Q20 every now and again when I remember or when I'm really bored and I get into "maintenance mode"
 
I'm having some problems with my trigger mech. at the moment. RA have offered to swap out the cassette & investigate it -- but I am wondering if there might be something I can do to avoid having to do that. Anyone know how to remove the RA trigger mech. cassette (or is that best left to RA)?
 
I personally leave maintenance like that to them, I dont like working with the mech since its the most important peace of the gun and can potentially be dangerous if you make a cock up. But its easy for me RA is 5km's away from my house lol.

I gave it a good wash out & it dry loaded & unloaded fine. So I went out Saturday. Entering the sea, I washed my mask & gun in the sea before entering and was surprised to see gravel coming out behind the trigger! Despite being very careful to avoid the grit, it is everywhere on the beach, it gets kicked up & is also carried in the water. Anyway, I had one misload soon after entering but after that everything was good and I had my most prolific spearing day yet (even caught a mackeral on my spinning rod afterwards!). So looks like the mech is ok -- must have just been grit from the beach.
But its easy for me RA is 5km's away from my house lol.
