SO Sara - are you fasting?

no... but we have some guidelines... although i have already seen some expat women in strappy tops and shorts today!!! :duh

During Ramadan, in deference to Muslim sensibilities, we have put together the following Dos and Don’ts as a guide to those of you who are new to the region:
Don’ts
… smoke, drink or eat anywhere in public between sunrise and sunset.
… uninhibitedly expressing your affection in public for your mate or spouse.
… wear revealing clothes
Dos
… Politely refuse food and drink in public during the day even if offered by a Muslim friend.
… participate in the Ramadan festivities

Hiya

Thanx Sara!!

A bit more info:

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. The Month of Ramadan is also when it is believed the Holy Quran "was sent down from heaven, a guidance unto men, a declaration of direction, and a means of Salvation"
It is during this month that Muslims fast. It is called the Fast of Ramadan and lasts the entire month. Ramadan is a time when Muslims concentrate on their faith and spend less time on the concerns of their everyday lives. It is a time of worship and contemplation

During the Fast of Ramadan strict restraints are placed on the daily lives of Muslims. They are not allowed to eat or drink during the daylight hours. Smoking and sexual relations are also forbidden during fasting. At the end of the day the fast is broken with prayer and a meal called the iftar. In the evening following the iftar it is customary for Muslims to go out visiting family and friends. The fast is resumed the next morning

The good that is acquired through the fast can be destroyed by five things -

- the telling of a lie
- slander
- denouncing someone behind his back
- a false oath
- greed or covetousness

These are considered offensive at all times, but are most offensive during the Fast of Ramadan

During Ramadan, it is common for Muslims to go to the Masjid (Mosque) and spend several hours praying and studying the Quran. In addition to the five daily prayers, during Ramadan Muslims recite a special prayer called the Taraweeh prayer (Night Prayer). The length of this prayer is usually 2-3 times as long as the daily prayers. Some Muslims spend the entire night in prayer

On the evening of the 27th day of the month, Muslims celebrate the Laylat-al-Qadr (the Night of Power). It is believed that on this night Muhammad first received the revelation of the Holy Quran. And according to the Quran, this is when God determines the course of the world for the following year

When the fast ends (the first day of the month of Shawwal) it is celebrated for three days in a holiday called Id-al-Fitr (the Feast of Fast Breaking). Gifts are exchanged. Friends and family gather to pray in congregation and for large meals

Thats a VERY BASIC description!!!

Ramadan Mubarak to all others!!!:D:D:D:D

Fasting during the day and eating so much during the night to compensate, the hospitals fill up! It can happen. :) Happy Ramadan though, a good moment for reflection.

I had some friends in Iran (and they were Iranian) who were hiking through the mountains during Ramadan and they ran out of water. Desperate, they innocently asked for some water as they were parched for thirst and were literally run out of the village with people chasing them.

Ahhh Good old Ramadan. smelly breath, grumbly tummy, sleepless nights due to overindulging at late nite dinners, and those Drummers who wake you up for breakfast at 2.30 am.(Well they do in Ankara) and i wouldnt change it for anything. its not just about Religion its about respect to elders and bringing families together (the eating).

Ramazan Bayramın Kutlu Olsun.
Ps we dont start untill tomorrow.

i wonder if there are Muslims who celebrate according to the moon in their home country? (like some Brits in Dubai who only celebrate New Year really when the Big Ben strikes twelve :hmm)

what's the rule with that Miles?

Assalamu alaikum and Ramadan Mubarak from Canada. Ours starts tomorrow Oct 5/05. This will be my 4th fast. I've cheated a bit in the past with liquids :rcard but otherwise succeeded. This year I'm going to try and cut out the liquids too :D

Hiya

Erik, it gets easier with time!!! My folks used to have a take-aways store. Imagine fasting with all that food around you!!! Was actually pretty easy, as you normally start fasting by the time you're 7 or 8 years old already. So by the time you become a teenager, its not that difficult.

Christian Fasting - A Lifestyle of Servant Living
Christian fasting is more than denying ourselves food or something else of the flesh - it's a sacrificial lifestyle before God. In Isaiah 58, we learn what a "true fast" is. It's not just a one-time act of humility and denial before God, it's a lifestyle of servant ministry to others. As Isaiah tells us, fasting encourages humility, loosens the chains of injustice, unties the chords of the yoke, frees the oppressed, feeds the hungry, provides for the poor, and clothes the naked. This concept of fasting isn't a one day thing - it's a lifestyle of servant living for God and others.

"Then your light shall break forth like the morning, your healing shall spring forth speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, 'Here I am.' (Isaiah 58:8-9)

Saludos

Daniel.
