g'day fellas,
being out of the water for a while i decided to jump in my local pool this morning. i was using my mask, not goggles.
when i dive down to around 4-5 metres i feel this dull pain near the inside of my right eye socket near my nose on the bone. is this the mask's problem or just me not used to the pressure? the pain increases and becomes sharper as i go down further so that forced me to jump out.
any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
cheers

Sounds to me like you might have a blocked sinus passage.
Or sinus infection
Could be worth using a sinus spray and see if it helps or snort some warm water and Salt that will clear things out for you.

Re: random pain>>Clearing?

Did you clear your ears like you would in the ocean? One needs to do that even in shallow water.

If you did clear your ears did you notice any unusual resistance?

Did the pain subside when you returned to the surface or did it remain once you surfaced? If it remained, that's called a 'reverse block' and indicates sinus congestion or even a sinus infection.

I recommend not doing any freediving (or clearing your ears) for at least a week. Could be you have a cold coming on and don't know it yet.

Take a pseudofed a half hour before your next dive. That will clear up your sinuses and make clearing much easier.

Cheers,
Steve

thanks guys.
i actually did had a chest and sinus infection couple of weeks back. i dont have trouble breathing now but i still cough up green stuff when i wake up in the morning. it sounds like the infection is still around and affecting me. i dont have any trouble equalising my ears but i guess i have to do something about it.
thanks so much.

Yea, it sounds like a blocked sinus...

However, I don't suggest that you take any medication immediately prior to diving. You might take one the night before so that you are diving at the end of its effectiveness.... These cold meds can effect cardio and mindset, be careful.

I have used that spray. It is a pure salt water spray. I find it good for sinus congestion. If you have a bad infection, you still need to see a doctor, but if it is just general congestion which gets in the way of diving, then the Sterimar spray might help. At least it can't do any harm, so it's worth giving a try.

Hm if you cough up you colored liquid especialy green you might consider yourself still ill if you ask me. How severe was your infection. did you actualy had breathing difficulties during it as you mentioned?

I just recognized a lot of pneumonias around here in vienna a very agressive form also attacking a lot of young people you would not expect to have a pneumonia.

Maybe you want to check a medic just for safety?

hi rob,
i have mild asthma which is triggered by infections when weather changes (ie summer-autumn). i usually get chest infections and i did 2-3 weeks ago with infection around my nasal area as well. i had trouble doing exercise because my heartrate sped up a lot and i had trouble taking deep breaths.i saw the doctor and was on anti-biotics for about a week and the green stuff in my chest went away and i was able to do sports again. however, i think there are still leftovers around my sinuses which is stopping me from diving.
stuff i m coughing up now isnt green anymore, just thick and a little annoying when i wake up. i guess i have to rid of it all to allow me to start diving again.
any suggestions?

cheers
kenny

Well I am no doc but I would say infections are not fun bc they simply need their time even with antibiotics.
The fact that the green coloring has gone is a good sign I guess but I would say you might wait till you feel nice an comfy again.

Robert

yeah thats true
better to be safe than sorry. gotta stay patient and just give it some time i guess.
thanks for the advice, and everyone else too.
cheers

I have the same problem. I have a chronic chest infection, and a few days ago I had flu, which made it much worse, so now I am on antibiotics again. I have been on antibiotics a lot for the past year. A couple of days ago I went out of London for a day, to a part of the country with very clean air, and I felt much better.

hi lucia,
i know precisely how you felt with the chest infection.
its horrible: puffing and wheezing after walking up a short stair case, not able to do any form of exercise, cant take deep breaths....etc
anti-biotics does the job well getting rid of the green stuff. but my fitness level drops by a big margin afterwards though, it weakens you heaps.
country air is nice and fresh, but thats how i got my chest infection last year when i went to a mate's farm, and the difference between day and night temperature is so big i wasnt used to it and thats how i got it.
anyway, how you get better and start diving again.
cheers
