OK, i'm gonna stick my neck out with this one....... could end in tears but its worth a try.

This is a place where people can vent their frustration and anger at the sometimes less than desirable posts most often associated with newbies (though sometimes not).

Hopefully the perpetrator will learn from it in a reasonably quiet and sensible fashion rather than being humiliated amongst peers causing resentment, distain and all that other non productive, negative, derogatory stuff that comes from open attacks on individuals on the 'big' threads.

Just for the record, here is the world (well spearo posting ethics) according to me, chris reynolds.

There is more than enough info on this forum that anyone new to the pastime, skill (not sport for me, though 'sporting chance' is a phrase i have used once or twice in relation to spearing) or anything else you want to call it, could have and should have read! Rules, Regulations, Size Limits, Species Lists, Exclusion Zones, Law, and the majority opinion is all readily available here and anyone truly new to the sport and with access to deeper blue has no excuse.

I've said it before and i'll say it again:

Ignorance is no defence in the eyes of the law!

That said, i also understand that everybody starts somewhere and that the majority of first fish will be small or even undersized due to inexperience, excitement, nerves and the want to actually put a fish on the table.

Even the forum big cheeses (shiny1, surfnspear, ukspearo, kkdavids, and all the others, some of which have stopped posting pics/stories for this very reason [sorry if i missed anybody.......fearo, flybotherer, etc]) all started somewhere and more likely than not with a fish that was sub 2lbs.......and even if they were lucky enough to get a 5lb beaut on there first go then i am sure that at some point in their early spearing days they have all got a fish back to shore and thought 'er, oops, that is a tad on the small side'. I know i have.......Gaz D will testify to that. (how are you by the way Gaz, long time no speak.......only a couple more weeks til the bass hit 'the spot').

Most of us know that if you're gonna post a picture of fish that contains a scale reference (ie: 75 gun, fin etc.) then the fish has to at least appear to be of minimum size against a measurable object.......if it does not appear legal, regardless of its actual size, then DON'T POST IT! a story is just as interesting, especially if it contains subtle clues to location without giving away the spot. (i'm NOT a fan of blatant spot naming...ESPECIALLY when its in my own back yard..................please take note east dorset residents!!! you'll only spoil it for yourself).

Most of us are adults and if someone says to me 'it was 2.5lb' it was 2.5lb, after all, what reason is there to lie? but i don't want to see a picture unless its obviously and undoubtedly of legal size. Not because i'm particularly adverse to viewing smaller, legal, fish but because i don't want there to be any excuse for some jobs worth moron to flag an issue with the law and get us all banned......oh, and i'm a bit bored of the over reaction from some members that generally accompanies any photo with even the faintest hint of borderline size issues.

As for posting pics of better than average hauls......well...........

I personally rarely get to spend enough time in the water to catch 10 fish....in fact 6 is my highest ever take in all my 12 or so years with a gun.
I may have had one or two opportunities to take more but i just don't.....in fact just the other morning i could have taken 3 or 4 bass and probably 20 4-5lb mullet but i didn't even pull the trigger (i have video footage but i haven't posted it because i'm still trying to figure out final cut pro 7, the footage doesn't do the fish size justice [still have the wide angle lens in the gopro] and podge would have a trouser tent situation! oh, and it wasn't gun mounted, i was having to hold it in my left hand.) If i came across a school of 200-300 free swimming 5lb+ bass (as i know at least one member does on more occasions than he admits) i would have no qualms taking 10 home. If i was in the shallows near a bass nursery or the like it would not be an option.

If i ever did take more than i thought i might when i set out, and i still wanted to do a write up for the forum, then maybe i would just take a pic of the best few.....cleaned up of course.

I would also like to say at this point that maybe once or twice i may have 'swapped' fish for paper. i am well aware of the law regarding this and i strongly advise people not to do it but i took the risk a couple of times in my youth and was lucky. £50 for a few bass or loosing all your gear, boat and possibly car? its your choice.................a no brainer for most i'd imagine (though fish oil doesn't run a diesel engine, which is quite important when you have 2 children and a poorly paid job.) Again i do not condone such actions, and i am not trying to justify it in any way, i'm just trying to suggest that i understand how on the odd occasion this happens. Besides, 95% of spearos wouldn't have a cat in hells chance of making any real money from catches.....its far too inconsistent.

I would also like to say that i understand the comments from some people and quite often feel they are justified but i am getting a bit bored of the same old flamewars every year and feel that this could all be dealt with in a much more efficient and effective manner without the derailment of so many threads over a fish that was 37.49cm or whatever, and the public humiliation of newbies.

we're all adults.....lets act like it.

rant over

chris.

Unfortunately life is never so simple - to start with deeper blue is not just a spearfishing forum, we have over 30 thousand registered members who have an interest in underwater sports of all kinds including conservation. (apart from the spammers of course)

The UK regional threads are just a part of the forum but they can be read by many folk, not just forum members but anyone can open the pages & read the text, possibly including sea fishery officers who are said to lurk our pages!!

So the staff have an obligation to monitor what is posted & if any forum rules are broken then we will take action.

In many cases however, the forum rules will not of been broken & even though we (the staff) may have received request to remove controversial pictures or text we are not inclined to do so unless the situation becomes to unruly!

However - it is a fact that every time a picture of a large catch or a photo of a very small fish, even if it is legal size, is shown on the forum there will be controversy, sarcasm & occasional arguments that develop!!

I would advise anyone who would like to post pictures of a large catch of fish to inclued a suitable catch report to accompany the photo, a good story will always help to explain the catch & add interest to the picture.

It would be impossible to please every one but deeper blue remains a fantastic source of information with hard working, unpaid staff, who are always trying to keep things moving smoothly.

I find it a terrible shame if some folk have decided not to participate in the posting of catch reports & I would be very interested in any ideas of how to encourage theses folk back onto the forum.

Nice rant Chris, and its like Foxy has said above but with one more thing-

Where did you see those Mullet??????????

Well put chris

My point on the matter

1- undersize fish occasionally get caught
2- don't advertise it
3- if someone does , educate don't destroy them!

100% agree with you on all 3 points
If ever there was a post that deserves Rep then this is it.

Hello Chris,

Agree with most of that mate, apart from the bit about you taking undersized fish - not sure that I have ever seen you do that.

Definitely agree with the bit about people blatantly naming/giving away locations on the open forum though: a lot of time and effort can go into discovering a local 'sweet spot', only to have someone else come bumbling along for the first time, on their lucky day, and then announcing it to the entire world.

Sorry I haven't managed to hook up this season - I've been abroad a lot this year and just haven't had the time on my hands.

.

Gaz you took the words right out of my mouth.

I cringe when I see spots been named on here and I hate to say it but the vast majority of people who read these threads are lurkers ( non posters) and contribute nothing to our Forum :ycard

Its soul destroying when you log on to see the names of your dive spots posted all over an open forum for the world to see. Its why I no longer tell anyone apart from the wife and the coast guard where I dive.

Right, that's me joining the coastguard (well, you're already married so what choice have I got?)!

.

I know where young Mr Wilson dives…..and…….it’s…….out in the SEA.roflrofl

...Its why I no longer tell anyone apart from the wife and the coast guard where I dive.
It is a dilemma. I used to post lots of locations, on the basis that at least it would give folk the opportunity to spread out, rather than "honey potting" around 1 or 2 spots. In practice most of the SW coast of Britain is spear-able, under some conditions. Look at a map of the coast and make some educated guess (take wind & chop into account) and you will likely do okay.

RE. small fish
Last year I left a tiny bass I encountered, only to see a couple of child spearos carrying it up the beach less than half an hour later . Not good, but not the end of the world either* (& I'm sure they ate it). Getting the first fish of the day on the stringer is an exciting prospect. Inevitably beginners tend to get excited and anxious about getting a fish, almost any fish sometimes, but that soon passes. As time goes on folk tend to relax and become more selective about what they will take.

DeeperBlue forums now usually suggest and recommend Only Bass 42+cm - be considered as potential targets (or has it increased further now?). Sustainable fishing. Us older guys only need the fish stocks to last another 30 years -- you younger guys will need them to last much longer (and if you'd like your kids and grand kids to fish too...). To catch immature fish is to risk ridicule, on the beach/sea shore/forums, not to mention fines and confiscation of equipment & transport by the authorities.

*But, with perhaps only 150-500 spearos in Britain (most active only for a few hours a year), it's a drop in the ocean compared to the tons of fish discarded by each and every commercial trawler (British and foreign), daily.

Considering there are about 12+ shops in the UK now well stocked with spearing gear - I can assure you that the number of UK spearo's extends into the thousands.

FMS!!! I just read all that, can you get Podge to just give it a quick once over first please Victor.

Thanks

Really? Could you please list these well-stocked spearing shops for our benefit?

[If there really are thousands of spearos, what a pity so few signed the petition to prevent the EUs proposed inadvertent ban a year or so ago. That reached only a few hundred, and included friends, family & readers of The Field magazine. The few hundred figure was also mentioned by a spearfishing gear importer/exporter in a post a year or so ago.]

Hmmm... that was hard - 1 minute Google search. There'll be plenty more... Maybe 'well stocked' was an over statement but there are a lot of places selling gear.

Do the maths - lets say there are only 12 places in the UK selling spearing gear, there are obviously more. How much does an average spearo spend on gear per year? Let's say £200, which I think is optimistic. If there are your supposed 150 spearos, that means they buy £30,000 of stock. Lets say the mark up on spearing gear 20%, that means (LOL) that there is a total of £6,00 profit to be made per year out of the UK spearing community. Right... so 12 places selling spearing gear... for their troubles, make £500 profit per year, each. That's just over £40 a month rofl

That really adds up doesn't it.

Kudos for getting a list of 12 - several of those are new to me. However I'll make several observations:

* Most are not solely or even primarily spearfishing stores - many are dive stores, which likely make most of their money on SCUBA and other marine activities (boat stuff, kayaks, freediving, water skiing, beach gear, training, etc.). I can think of 2 that distribute spear gear to other (mainly dive) stores/retailers/outlets (e.g. clubs/trainers).

* While I can think of 2 relatively well-stocked spear-gear suppliers (one on the mainland), I question whether the others are well-stocked with spearfishing gear. Even some of the better stock suppliers only hold stock "for the season" (e.g. one order per year, in Spring - if the stock is low).

* Some are part-time/hobby*/side businesses/side-lines (and possibly "for the love of it"/prestige/as a favour in some cases).

Yes I could well be wrong, but my gut feeling is that the few hundred figure is probably pretty close to the true figure for active spearos per year in the UK currently (which no doubt ebbs & flows somewhat, as people come into & leave the activity or become temporarily dormant from it). For anyone planning to make a business out of spearfishing, it might be important - it's something to consider/look into if putting together a business plan.

The £200 figure per spearo sounds reasonable & yes is probably a bit high (esp. as some folk will make the major purchases - wetsuit & speargun - abroad); assuming you don't include big-ticket peripherals such as RIBs/boats/engines, trailers, kayaks, roof racks, etc.. However, I expect the mark-up is often much more than 20%. VAT now is 20% + UK overheads (various taxes, expenses, insurances, legal advice/coverage, rent, staff, staff benefits & taxes,...) - tough business?

*A local bank manager warned a friend who was about to buy a shop that most of the stores in his nearby village/town do not make money and are "the hobbies of rich mens' wives". (However, he was confident & signed the contracts but the seller welched on the deal and ended up compensating him thousands of pounds for breach of contract - a fairy tale ending?!).

I could MAKE A MILLION POUNDS IN THE BUSINESS OF SELLING SPEAR FISHING GEAR

Just lend me two million ;-)

Spaniard did have some figures a few years back, to be honest I cant remember the exact number but I do remember how surprisingly low it was !!
I will send him a mail to see if he still have the figures..
