I currently have a 95cm Beuchat Marlin Elite gun and I'm not completely satisfied with it. I want to upgrade to a 120cm gun but I am unsure of what to get.

Riffe
Omer
Beuchat
Rob Allen
Etc?

I've heard a lot of good things about Rob Allen guns but sadly there is no importer in Malta that brings these guns in as I know of. But surely there must be a way I could ship it over legally somehow.

I need a gun that's powerful enough and accurate. My current gun is quite heavy for what it is! Should i be looking for a carbon gun on a 120?

Recommendations please :)

I would recommend either a carbon gun, or a well balanced wood gun at 120 length, as in my opinion an aluminium one is quite heavy and restrictive when swinging around in the water. I recommend RA equipment to everyone as that is personally all that i use, and i cannot fualt it. But many decent spearos successfully use other guns and recommend them so i guess its personal preference. If you do like the look of the RA guns maybe email these guys and see if they will post it over to you at a reasonable price :

Spearfishing & Freediving equipment | Rob Allen Spearguns UK

They are distributors for Rob Allen equipment both in the UK and in Greece, and offer friendly advise about everything spearfishing related.

Ah ok great. Thanks for the advice! Im not going for aluminium thats for sure, but unsure about wood and carbon and which is better.

I know there are lots of good cheap guns out there that can do the job just as good, but I kinda really want a RA lol.

Is there any specific model I should be looking at, carbon perhaps?

I am coming to Gozo in 10 days.

I do not mind bringing you gun (or any other gear) from UK, but it might be now too short time for you to arrange the details.

You can always try my railguns 120, 140. They are aluminium and yes, they are heavy.

They are great guns. As for a specific model it all depends on the size/species of fish you are targeting, as well as the vis you frequently dive with. The different models use different spear/rubber combinations. For example for bigger hard skinned fish I would recommend a 7mm spear with double 16mm rubbers. Some people prefer using a 7.5mm spear for that extra punch. Some people prefer using a 7mm spear with one single 20mm band. Or if you are targeting medium sized fish a good combo would be 6.6mm spear with 18mm band, and smaller fish maybe a 6.3mm spear with 16mm bands. Going by your initial post I would say you are targeting medium/big fish (you said you want more power) so I would recommend a 7mm spear double 16mm band setup. This is a popular setup in the uk for the bigger species that don't come in too close and often sit just out of range of shorter guns.

This is my personal opinion, but I think you will not be disappointed with any carbon gun.

Another thing to remember when choosing your setup is if you are fishing at maximum range for the gun, I would add a bungy and also maybe opt for a double wrap setup to ensure maximum range and reliability. Also remember that a 6.3mm spear is a thin spear and with the length required for a 120 gun (160cm spear length) you may find the spear wobbles a lot. So a thicker spear may ensure greater accuracy.

Yeah that's the setup I was looking at. I target all species, but I am trying to improve my game and target amberjack, dentex, trevally, barracuda etc. but Im still a 'experienced' rookie so I go for all species, both reef and open water fish.

I currently have a 125cm 7mm salvimar torsion 2 shaft with 2 16mm bands on my 95cm Beuchat, but everytime I shoot it the bands get tangled up with the line attahed to the spear which is p***ing me off. No idea why this is happening. Any idea?

Quite hard to say without seeing it (picture). But as a stab in the dark I would say the line is not laying properly on the barrel, maybe it is not hooking over the muzzle properly, so it is laying too much line on top of the barrel as apposed to underneath it. Even with double wraps there should only be one length of line on top of the gun, the rest should be held underneath the gun. Do you use a bungee, or is the line going slack when you load the rubbers?? Is the gun designed to use double rubbers or is the barrel flexing??

Without being funny if you could upload a picture it will help us see what is causing you problems

I will take a picture next time I go and have a camera with me. But i'm doing it the way i'm supposed to. I dont use bungee since i use a reel, but the line isnt slack.

From the bottom of the spear the line goes to the right around a plastic bit, over the spear, goes around another plastic bit on the left and under the barrel. Like the picture below

Ah that makes sense about using a reel. Sorry I overlooked that. I see that is an open muzzle design so the crimp cannot be catching on the muzzle. I will study the pic and see if I can think of any reason the rubbers are catching on the line. For the moment I'm all out of ideas

OK thanks :)

I contacted the local police and asked what I need to do to import a weapon, and it shouldnt be a problem as ling as Rob Allen sends me all the documentation I need, so I'll look into that and hopefully have a carbon 120cm Rob Allen by Q1 2013 :)

Sounds good to me. Keep us updated with it and I will let you know if I can think of a solution to your line wrap problem.

Just a quick thought, Is the crimp behind/in front of the rubber when looking down the barrel and the gun loaded??

The metal sleeve that holds the mono/dyneema together. The mono goes through the sleeve and is then crimped to Form a loop holding the spear.

Ah ok. I have 2 crimps, one at the bottom of the spear to hold in place and the other that connects the mono line to the dyneema cord for the reel. Did i explain right?

Yea that's right. So the crimp that holds the spear is that in front of the rubber (between the rubber and the muzzle) or behind the rubber (between the handle and the rubber)?? Hope this makes sense, I'm terrible at explaining things
