Hey all,
I was thinking about planning a freediving trip soon (if I have the time off will be in a month or so) and was wondering if anyone had had some good experiences with places they could recommend? Was hoping to do some further education at the same time if possible but not strictly necisary. I was originally considering going to Thailand but it sounds like there is some pretty serious weather related problems at the moment which may prevent that. Would love to go to Egypt but not sure if I'm brave enough given the current situation as I'll probably be traveling by myself. If anyone has some recommendations I'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance :)

I just added a new center to my site today: Freediving-Philippines

From the sounds of it Wolfgang has put together a very cool freediving operation in the Philippines, which I would like to go check out some day soon. He has depth there and lots of tropical sea life. And he also does a bit of spearfishing. Also it is quite close to OZ.

To be honest with you Egypt is very stable now and there is very little to be concerned with if you are planning to travel here. We just arrived back from Thailand the other day and spent several days in Cairo. We felt very safe, people were very welcoming and the atmosphere is amazing. The people are very positive about their country and its future. There is little cause for concern if you want to travel to the area.

From a travelers perspective if you want to come freediving in Egypt, you can fly strait to Sharm El Shiek, located in south Sinai. I think there are quite cheep flights running now as the tour companies are interested in moving things forward again. It’s about 90 Km south of Dahab. There is virtually no safety concern here. The revolution that you saw on TV didn’t affect the area at all. Everything is business as usual, except there are less people around these days. From the Airport you can arrange direct transportation to Dahab where you can find some of the best freediving sites in Egypt.

If you are looking for training we have several scheduled courses running over the next while. You can check the schedule on our web site: (www.worldoffreediving.net). If there is not something there that fits your schedule send me an email and we can work something out. Also we can help you arrange transportation from the airport, and put you in touch with some good accommodations here in Dahab. If you need any more information about the situation here in Sinai, Dahab, or Egypt in general feel free to send me an email.

All the best,
Dean Spahic

Thanks for the advice, I didn't realise that it may be reasonably safe to freedive Egypt at the moment. If I decide to come to Egypt will contact you :)

If you are happy to go to Egypt then also contact:
Freedive Dahab - If you don't know how to do the mouthfill yet, then these are the right ladies to teach you.

Another great option is Only One - If you want to do sled dives, both fun and serious then Marco and Andrea are the right men for the job.

Or better yet, do both - a mouthfill course or training with FDD and sled diving with Only One. They are about 1 hour away from each other and you can easily travel between Dahab and Sharm.

Hey Jacblue (That's Jacinta, right? :wave )

Thailand is fine where we are. We actually only see the lots of water on the internet, Outside my window, the sun is out and the weather is fine.
So if you want to drop by, then Phuket is definitely good to go. :)
It's be nice to see you again! :-D

Hello, you remembered me! :D
Sorry about the slow reply, haven't been on this site for a while (everything kind of went on hold/got very busy there for a while there). I heard you'd moved to phuket, would be great to see you guys again. Yes I'm learning that the media over this way seems to be good at making things sound a lot worse that it actually is it seems.

Asia: definitely go to Moalboal,Cebu Island, in the Philippines, and train with Wolfgang. (there's also a handful of local Freedivers you can join for dives). The coral there is magnificent! Here are a few photos.
There's massive drop-offs a short swim from the beach.
Plus the Philippines is a great place for a holiday, and people are super friendly.

Otherwise, you can go to the Freediving Mecca in Dahab, Egypt - I go there every year and train with Lotta and Linda from Freedive Dahab. If your focus is on depth it's the best place I know of.

Cheers,
Tanguy

Or somewhere in the Maldives... no further freediving education there... but who cares! :)

If you find your way to Dahab, check out some of the other people working there as well. Im not in town untill sept, but you can take a look at www.totalfreedive.com.

Wendy holds most of the Dutch records and is one hell of a good freediving instructor. Taking a course with her will surely be a pleasure. There is also www.aqualibrium.ru. Im not sure if he has translated the site yet, but send an email to Kostia. He is a really solid instructor and you will get a great course with Him. If you are coming to Dahab some time around the end of Sept, then you can send me an email aswel (dean@worldoffreediving.net) or just drop in at the dive center. We are located inside Sea Poneer which is a dive center located right on the beach at the light house diving area. I would be happy to set you up with whatever course work or diving activites that you are interested in. We do everything from AIDA courses to Dive Safaris. Our Web site is www.worldoffreediving.net. All the best to you and if you need any info about freediving in Dahab just send me an email and I would be happy to answer.

All the best,

Dean Spahic
