Record Attempt by Martin STEPANEK

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Nice! Great to hear Martin back at it. Is the 111m announced by Martin the record attempt or a prerequisite as that's the current record by Herbert?

Go Martin !!!
Keep us updated!

How much more fun it would be to see the stars of freediving competing side by side - the ten best in the world. That "big blue" feeling. Sharing the same organization.

But anyhow - nice taht he is "at it".

The best freediving event in history, in my opinion, was the world static apnea contest of Monaco (july 2005). The 12 best static apnea athletes together, expenses paid, in front a huge open air (nighttime) crowd of 1000-2000 people, with a 25m movie screen and music --> plus live transmission on the internet. It is so sad that arguments with the sponsors prevented the DVD from ever being created.

Why was the sponsors a hold-up? They didn't want the exposure, or what?

Just put it on Youtube, I say...

They should have an annual event like that. An equivalent to the NBA 'All-Stars' or something. They should experiment with that formula in depth, too. Have a depth stand-off in Dean's Blue Hole in the Bahamas, or something...

The biggest event that never came to anything was some years back when Pelizzari challenged Pipin to compete head to head with him in constant, variable and no-limits. I don't remember exactly what Pipin had said about Pelizzari or in what media or why it had p***ed Pelizzari off, all I know is that Pipin turned the offer down. DAMN, that would have been a great stand-off!!!

There is a video of Stéphan Mifsud's 8:28 from that event available. Not sure what he was smoking before the dive, but it looks incredibly - it is really worth of viewing: the last half a minute of his apnea, he applauds with hands over his head and then exiting quite clean.

There are two links for that video in the Freediving Media Base:

The World Static Apnea Contest of Monaco cost over 150,000 Euro to organize, and the sponsors only provided 46,000 Euro. Pierro Frolla had to borrow the other 104,000 Euro in the last minute from a friend. The main sponsor, IWC, felt that the event did not provide enough publicity, so they withheld the final money to make the DVD. Also, the 'cash' prizes of 1000 Euro / 500 Euro / 250 Euro were replaced in the last minute with an IWC watch (1st), and Suunto Mosquito (2nd) and a trophy for 3rd.

I know that monaco is very expensive, but 150.000 euro to organize an event like that... did they replace the water in the pool with sevruga caviar???

look @my website, specially the video1 (from stephan mifsuds special static).
you can see, what pierre frolla has organized with 150.000 euro. its look like the olympic games - and it was a real olympic feeling! (thanks for that pierre!).
the event was a proof that static apnea competitions dont have to be boring.

apart from that: the flights, the transfers, the food, the accommodation - everthing was free for every athlet.
