Recordattempts under Ice failed

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Quote from the article: Some of us may wonder how he can pursue nine records when there are only eight disciplines in freediving? Well he just invents a new category. Dynamic under Ice with scooter. It is also known as a "Redl". To do a "Redl" is to invent your own discipline when you do not have what it takes to beat an existing record.

LOL!
Reminds me of the 'Pulling a Homer" episode of The Simpsons rofl
Peace,
Erik Y.

I think I might get some freedivers together and have a go at the "under water ironing" world record...it's currently the domain of the scuba diver but why should they have a monopoly on it!!

here is the link(surprisingly more organised and ratified than under ice freediving)
http://www.diving.co.nz/ironing2005.htm

....then I might try for the under ice knitting record

This Daros Gray guy sounds like one of the most arrogant and reckless people I've ever heard of.

He says that after a 79m sled dive he had a blackout for 3+ minutes where his heart stopped beating the whole blackout?? I hope that is an exaggeration. Even an intermediate freediver can do a 79m sled dive, WITHOUT the 3 minute blackout.

Funny how the reporter is totally clueless. He says the world record in static is 9'01" ?? By who? Why invent that number in particular?

It's a shame to see freediving being portrayed as extremely dangerous. (This article)

People read things like that and then they don't let us use the pool, or they beg us not to go diving or even hold our breath because it's so dangerous.

Ohhh, ohhhhh, ohhhh

Gives me a great idea for this fall "Redl-A-Palooza"!rofl

We'll have apnea drinking games, apnea walking contests, apnea ironing, apnea bike riding- all underwater of course.

We can then name them the "Freshwater, Madison, Wisconsin, USA, Saturday afternoon, October, quarry, less than 70 degree's, limited visibilty, WORLD champion! rofl

Of course we'll have to ratify a new champion then next day so we can publsih those numbers as well.;)

Jon

I hold the current no limits Zebra Muscle record. Also 'fish not seen under 36F'.

I think I'll claim an apnea record for inventing records...not actually doing any of them just holding my breath while I think of some and write them down on a dive slate.....I like the idea of a record about records....like a derivative for all those finance people out there.....what a joke some people are!

Hey come on, give Christian a break. He just likes diving and organizing events, so he made up a few records...Personally I think the hockey thing is pretty cool...And if no one is diving under the ice with a scooter, you might as well call it a record. You will find much sillier records in the Guinness book...It's still a lot better than claiming that diving in freshwater is like having 2 guys hanging on your legs and basically just making stuff up to make your efforts seem somehow more "extreme".

When I first saw the announcement of Daros Grays "records", I was wondering why no one commented on it. I figured it was just so obviously a joke or a hoax or something like that, that people didn't bother. Paul seems to have a pretty dark sense of humour (if I remember correctly, Paul Kotik first wrote about it in DB). But now I don't find it that funny anymore. The one thing I dislike the most about freedivers in general is the "mystification" of the sport. I hate it when people try to give the impression that they are some mythic half-dolphins with some sort of genetic defect to be able to hold their breath for 4 minutes. The truth is, any person of average fitness can do that with a few weeks of intensive training. And that's the message we should take to the layman if we ever want this thing to grow...Of course, if it grows, we're not all so special anymore...There's no mystery to it...You can train it like anything else. It's the childish "hey ma, look at me, no tanks!" kind of narcistic behaviour that is creating this unnecessary gap between scuba-divers and freedivers that I dislike. There's room for both under the surface and scuba and freediving are just 2 ways to get there...Different tools for different things. But usullay it's all in good fun and only slightly annoying scubbies, which is healthy...

Anyway, this is taking that whole mystification and "larger than life" thing just way over the edge. So much so, that it's not really even funny anymore. And the statements about 3 minute cardiac arrests or whatever...

Daros, if you're reading this, please just stop it...Just...Stop. Learn to dive properly and safe. If diving and breaking records is your dream, that's cool. Keep at it, but at least get the facts right and don't flat out lie to the press! What you're doing is hurting our sport and basically tearing down years of careful building of a public image that freediving is not extreme or insane, but fun, safe and accessible to all. All that for just a few moments of publicity and 15 minutes of fame? Please tell me you're at least getting some money out of it...

I still kind of think that it's all just some inside joke that I don't get. Some kind of sarcastic jab at the whole diving community. I thought I was pretty good at spotting sarcasm, but I admit defeat.

I never understood what was so great about the self destructive "every time I go underwater, I go there to die a little bit" image that some divers project. Perhpas we all have watched the Big Blue a little too many times?

Its about time someone had a bit of fun taking the micky out of Free divers.

Some of you guys a just to cool for school.

I though the bit about having a medic scuba diver every 15 foot of 130 feet gave it away in the first paragraph.

Take a deep breath and relaxe.
As long as the Sport in portrayed to be extreme and deadly and if you do one thing wrong you will die, and the only people that can do it are super human cross breeds that breath out of a set of gills hidden between their butt cheeks, None of the general popualtion with even think of doing it.

What has allways amazed me is there are hundreds of people that snorkle of the West Australian coast every weekend. Kids, mums. dads, of all ages and
a quite few of them do a damn good job of it. but tell them that they are Free Divers and they would laught at you and tell you to piss off, they are just doing what they enjoy.

So let this guy have a bit of fun, do you think that 99.99999% of the worlds population even give a toss

Well, you know, that was sort of my point.

The only real things that separate a beginner freediver from an advanced snorkeler are the "cool looking" equipment and the fact that he looks very serious during initial hyperventilation and calls it "pranayama".

What should separate them is the knowledge of basic risks and safety.

But yeah, we do take ourselves too seriously. If this was sarcasm, then it is a welcome refreshing reminder of that fact.

Some friends and I were going to create a website which each year awards something called:
THE CHRISTIAN REDL AWARD

This award is given only once per year, to the freediver who does the best job at creating fictional record categories in order to acquire fame.

The 2006 CHRISTIAN REDL AWARD goes to:

DAROS GRAY

(Even before the record attempts actually take place!!)

Congratulations Daron!

Even though I have taken part in this mockery of these recordinventers I must say that I do not condemn what they are doing. I think there are room for us all under water. But they must understand that their way of portraying the sport - falls back on the rest of the community of freedivers (as others pointed out so well here).

The exagerations of dangers, the mystification and of course the ego thing of a self proclaimed world record status to an achievement that some hundred other guys could have done.

But lets face it - diving under ice is harder. The first one to challenge Redls 150 meter scooter DYN ended up with only 25 meters and a banged head).
The great Stepanek made a 132 meter course under ice (?) and succeeded "only" with 87 meters. Its more of an achievement to dive under ice and for canadians, norwegians, swedes, finnish and russians (and some mountain regions) ice is what covers the waters and sometimes we still want to dive.

I actually think we need some STANDARD for icediving records. "Above the arctic circle" is not good enough.

The president of Aida Int (privately) came up with a "cold water standard" = when the surface temp and the temp at the turning point divided by two is less than 10 celcius.

Neat - but I would rather see an ICE standard. Something like; if you dive in a wake where the ice around it is thick enought to stand on - then it is an ice dive.

Or in case of dynamic: there has to be ice above you when diving. Only holes every 25 meters or at targeted distance is allowed. Dangerous - yes - but thats what is appealing for some.

PS I once suggested a mediaofficer on the Aidaboard - if that would have been reality that person would now have contacted all the journalists that had written about Daros and given them a short cordial explanation what performance freediving is.

PS 2 I do believe that Daros was unlucky - I think he has more to give in the future.

Dynamic under Ice with scooter. It is also known as a "Redl". To do a "Redl" is to invent your own discipline when you do not have what it takes to beat an existing record.

really nice - but false ... because the italian freediver nicola b. dived 100m with scooter before me - that was the reason why i beat him. he also had the record with 85m with fins ...

the icehockey this year was really cool - the guys from slovika are really cool freedivers, not all freedivers want to dive under ice - you have to try it - its not so easy as you think!

next year i organise the 1. worldchampionship in icehockey under ice ... all interested countries can send a mail. you need 2 freedivers - thats all ... if you wish you can bring your own sponsors ... pics and video on my site from this year.
we had a big press-conferenc and lot of medias.
after 2 years we organise a really big event to promote freediving! there are many ways to promote FREEDIVING!!!!!

see u
