I've not been very successful at reducing my heart rate during dry statics. Is this normal? In the pool they seem to get softer if not reduced bpm, which I equate to a stronger dive reflex due to water on the face.

It's highly individual. In some people HR doesn't drop at all or only slightly during dry STA. In others strong bradycardia develops even under dry conditions. How long are your dry breatholds and when do contractions start?

My wet Static PR is 4:00 and contractions start around 2:45. I feel confident that I can beat that number pretty easily now as I'm just getting back into freediving After a 3 year break and know I'm physically capable of better numbers. I did a dry 3:00 static just to see where I was at the other day. I've never really gone for a max dry static as I feel handicapped without water for a strong dive reflex and don't want a mental block because of a poor time. If I stay focused I could probably turn a around a 4:00 dry static. The contractions come on around 1:30 dry.

If contractions start after 1:30, a decrease in HR should be already observed by 3min.

Slightly off-topic perhaps, and then again maybe not: You seem quite occupied with numbers, expectations etc. to a point where it is most likely very counter productive (as it mostly is for most people in the long run)... Perhaps you need to relax a bit before your body and heart can relax too...

Dude... please let go of that thought - and work on relaxation... You are caught in a trap it seems. Just do a dry static. It is training :) Have fun :)
