Hi there,
I am thinking of putting on a reel for my 28mm alluminum barrel. please find pics attached.

Personally, "horizontal" reel is prefered cause it seems produce less drag in the water.
But my gun does not have built-in reel track, so the reel bracket will be needed.
I am looking at several reels below
1. Picasso standard reel: reel bracket is needed.
2. Omer Match 30/50 and EXCALIBUR SPEARGUN REEL : bracket is needed, but is it http://www.omerdiving.com/product.aspx?product=60 ??
or ..they are not for my gun...
3. Omer universal reel: http://www.omerdiving.com/product.aspx?product=66
4. or other recommended horizontal reels?

Any comments or suggestions of you will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

The picasso reel does not have a good reputation, the omer match looks like a very good reel there were good comments about it on this forum. The reel I like to use on my sporasub is the imersion reel they cost 12 usd on scubastore. I am not sure how well they would fit on a 28 mm barrel.
I was also very impressed about the new sporasub reel, I've purchase one as well.

Strangelove,
I was thinking of buying the Sporasub Instinct reel for my Sporasub Aspic, but I'm curious, how does the imersion reel mount onto a Sporsub gun? I looked at the photo and it does not show a bracket. Also, does that gun have a drag, or can it be locked?
Thanks,
Ron.

The imersion reel will come will two plastic brackets that will go around the barrel to attach reel, however the way I've installed on my black vipers was to remove the handle insert a plug in the barrel, and drill one hole on the plug and another on the handle insert.
The reel has a knob that can use to control the drag, it has low profile and very durable, I had it for 9 years now, no big issues yet, it had never lock on me or broke so far. I have that reel two of my black vipers. On the other two I have the plastic omer universal.
I've just bought the new sporasub reel and installed on my teak-sea with 50 meters of the cressi line, I am going to take it to a test drive Saturday, but the reel looks very good it has a more volume then the imesion (but not a whole lot more), the plastic also feels a little bit better, the drag control is on the top of reel (I am not sure if I will get used to that).
The imersion is 12 usd the sporasub is 28 usd , will depend the type of fishing you and to do, for small guns (75/90) I would go with the imersion.

Hey thanks for the info. I assume you mounted the reel the way you did because of the integral rail in the Viper? I shoot an Aspic with a JBL rail I stuck on with 3m double stick tape. If the reel comes with a good bracket, I would probably just cut out a section of my rail, (I didn't do that great a job installing it anyway...), and use the bracket. I'm a bit timid about drilling holes in an already pretty thin barrel.
Thanks again, and let us know how the Sporasub reel works out.

You are correct, I've drilled the barrel because of the rail, with omer reel, I've sanded a portion of the rail, no barrel drilling was required.
The brackets do not look to impressive just your average thick eletric bracket (for the imersion reel). The sporasub, have detail instuctions and better locking brackets.

I looked at both on the deeperblue shop. So far the Sporasub has a pretty good reputation. Heck, even Riffe is using them on their Euro gun. I think when I get around to it, I'll probably go with that reel. Might even see about buying an extra bracket so I can mount it on two different guns...
Thanks again,
Ron.
