I've just been given an excaliber 2000 75 cm for my birthday, looks great andlooking forward to trying it out, ive had a really old small greek speargun till now with a nylon leash.

Has any one got advise on a reel pro's con's etc and also are shock absorbers needed?

The advantage of a reel is that you can shoot a big fish without getting your gun taken away from you. But if you have to ask, then I suspect that the fish you shoot are not large enough for that to be a concern. If so, save money and just use the "leash" if that means a piece of mono connecting the shaft to the gun.

No shock absorber is needed if you use a reel.

if by leash you mean the line connecting the gun to the spear, well, you'll still be using at least one wrap when its rigged with a reel, if you mean a floatline, well, if you are shore-diving, you need a dive flag, so you allready have to carry a floatline, you can just attatch the gun to that. i started using a reel a few months ago, and i love it, they make the gun track a little bit slower, but ive got fish with it that would have ripped off otherwise. now i keep my stringer clipped to the end of my floatline, and hold that in my other hand, when i shoot a fish big enough to fight with the reel, i can drop the stringer and then collect it after i have the fish.

a further question, i cant see the recomended way to attach the line and how it passes through etc, i'm normally quite practical but want to get this right the omer instructions dont cover this (they supplied mono filiment line and crimp sleeves) any help much appriciated
