I just received my first reel speargun and I'm a bit confused about it. Connected to the shaft was a black line. It was 15ft or so. I connected that black line to the reel line via a swivel/corkscrew.

Now, when I shoot my gun, is the reel supposed to be in free spool so that I can shoot further than the 15ft? Will my reel backlash? What's the procedure?

Hiya

The reel should be locked up fairly tightly. The reel is only used, should you shoot a large fish and you have to let it run. It doesn't offer any additional range to your gun. It's merely a "safety" line, which will allow you to get back to the surface once you've shot a fish that is large or has holed up.

Seeing that this is your first speargun, i would highly recommend using a floatline. Its VERY easy to drop and lose your reelgun. Much safer with a floatline.
