Diver "drowns" in waters off Fowey Rock Lighthouse
frown.gif

A 24-year-old diver died while exploring the waters off southeast Miami-Dade County, authorities said Sunday night.

Police identified the diver as Antonio Gonzalez of West Kendall. He and two other divers went out to explore the Brewster Reef while free-diving, which uses snorkels and masks instead of an air tank, said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Sabrina Elgammal.

About 2 p.m., all three surfaced in the area of the Fowey Rock Lighthouse, which is about seven miles southeast of Key Biscayne.

The weather was getting rough and the men decided to swim back to their boat, according to Miami-Dade police.

Antonio decided to stay for "one last dive" at some 35 feet deep.

Only two made it to the boat, authorities said. They called for help.

The missing diver was found not far away about an hour later, police said. Rescuers tried to administer CPR, but the man could not be revived.

Miami-Dade homicide detectives were investigating. No charges were filed.

When authorities and the media will finally get that "divers DON'T "DROWN"? This disfigures the real nature of the accident as drowning is the final result of a Shallow Water Blackout.

interesting, different sources are reporting the story differently. From the Key West Citizen:

June 2, 2010 - Diver who died was from Miami

Diver who died was from Miami. It was 24-year-old Ignel Gonzalez of Miami who died spear fishing Monday about five miles off Bahia Honda State Park. Family members of Gonzalez, who lived at 11227 NW Sixth St., were notified Tuesday, detectives said.

Gonzalez was free diving from a private boat with two friends from Miami when he and one of the friends speared a grouper in about 35 feet of water and had trouble landing it. Both were taking turns diving down and trying to wrestle the fish out of some rocks when Gonzalez didn't resurface from one attempt. The friends pulled him aboard, tried CPR, and met paramedics at the park, but Gonzalez was pronounced dead at Fishermen's Hospital.

Quite interesting indeed, I would agree! I'm attaching here the link as it was published by The Miami Herald.

I'm personally inclined to believe the latter one by JennyWren as it seems more descriptive of a typical blackout precursor situation. In any case, what a loss!

two slightly different names, two different addresses, different dive locations, same depth. Is the reporting about one dead diver or two?

As far as I read both different recounts it seems to me to be a misreporting of the same death. Hopefully as the days go by some clarification might come to surface.
