replacement cord

I need to replace the cord that connects the spear of my JBL speargun to the speargun itself. I used some cord that I bought at the hardware store, but the ends keep fraying and the knots have a tendency to easily untie. I need something that also will fit into the little "lip -thing" near the trigger to help keep the cord out of the way before I fire. Any suggestions on replacement cord?

Monoline, very strong wont easily break and it gets crimped on the ends, go to your dive shop Im sure they will be able to help you...
Do a search on monoline and see what comes up also read Dummies guide to spearfishing I think its mentioned there somewhere...

Brian - I bought some of this to replace some fraid line on one of my JBL's they sell crimps too.

What I'm looking for doesn't go on a reel.... it just needs to be about 4 feet long and connects the gun to the shaft. Is the monoline for this purpose or just to go on a reel? What are crimps?

I use:
-Dyneema/Spectra cord 1,5mm with knots on guns with a "closed" muzzle.
-Monoline if the gun has an "open" muzzle (and in this case check the "how to" in the Dummies guide of this forum as deepthinker said)
For your last questions:
1-crimps are those metal sleeves to hold the connections of monoline (you can't make knots on monoline because it's too tough).
2- monoline is both for reels or for the simple gun-shaft connection

There is a Thread called "How to rig a speargun" (or something like that). This explaines the mono, crimps, etc. Just do a search for it.

I had the same problem when I first purchased my gun, it came with braided nylon. I had my spear break off 3 times...luckily, I was able to recover it every time. I went on line & purchased some 300lb mono & crimps...haven't had a break off since...working great. Would highly recommend doing it the right way.

Thanks for the help. Anyone have a website where they sell monoline and crimps? The local dive shops have NO spearfishing equipment.
Or can I buy it at a fishing store?

I just did a google search & found the stuff I needed. Be certain to get crimps that are 1 size larger than your line. (I have 50 that are the same size...I have to make them bigger to work, but it is only sticking a nail through each side...kind of a pain, but not too bad...I'm too cheap to pay the freight for another bag.

Good luck, but like I said, this is the way to go. I just changed mine again - had no break-offs & this was after about 6 - 7 trips.

One other thing I did that I think helps take the shock off the line, was to install a small (6") rubber shock cord (short piece of surgical tube with swivel & snaps on it) where my line attaches to the gun (or in my case, to my reel line). You can find these in the Lake Michigan section of sporting goods stores usually next to the "Dipsy Divers". Then, when you shoot your entire line, when it comes to the end, your line & knots don't take the brunt of the shock, this rubber cord simply stretches out and comes back. Works good.
