replacing the chat room

Should the current chat system be replaced by #deeperblue on irc.freenode.net?

Hi Stephan and all,

The chat room linked above isn't very popular it seems, while the channel #DeeperBlue on irc.freenode.net by now has found a couple of regulars and even a bot to play with.

My suggestion is to link to that channel directly from DB and use freenode for our purposes. Since there are people there already, more will take a look and it will be a busy little place in no time (I guess :) )

For a direct link from Here to IRC, something like cgi:irc could be used. Check out IRC@work to see what it looks like. You can join the network from there and play with gills for a bit.
EDIT: Note: When using IRC@work, You have to change the server to irc.freenode.net and the channel to #DeeperBlue.:)

Apart from the channel being populated already, one has the choice which software to use to connect with the network. (And there's lots. xchat/gaim/mIRC, you name it...)
I only founded the channel because the software provided here wouldn't work for me and I couldn't connect to that chat with any other (without some hacking, that is).

Free software for free divers, I say.

The topic of how to get more people into real-time conversations has been discussed on #DeeperBlue for quite some time now.
What do You think?

Greetings,

Richard

Agreed! Like I already said in the "introducing gills" thread, mIRC is a much better program for live chat than the flash version (mIRC = more options and possibilities). I really think it should be replaced, especially as there are already some people who visit the irc.freenode.net channel regularly.
If people saw the number of online members in the chat room directly from the forums, surely many more would join.

So if you have time, drop by. ;)

I just read some of the documentation on installing cgi:irc, which doesn't seem too complicated. I think this might be well worth the effort.

Another thing would be to add IRC next to ICQ, AIM, Skype, ... to the supported IM-protocols in the profile.
