sneaked a peek down at boomers today since the woman was working the early shift. skunked again but conditons were damn fine. not the best i suppose but 10 to 15 w/ a light surge is a treat for me. swells 1-2. sun was out by the time i got there so that was a plus. only thing missing was a srtinger full of fish. saw a few barely legal calicos, one very large lobster and a good size kelp fish. didnt even touch the trigger today though. i was hoping to see more wsb but no such luck. i decided to go look for new sites so i spent about 3 hours running around the beaches and noticed some kelp beds out at swamis? anyone ever check em out?

i think i was there on or around the day you were at boomers.. water clearity was pretty good when i went too. im new to spearing but i have yet to see anything id consider a keeper in that area. then you go around the corner to the cove and the kelp bass will practically let you pet them. last weekend me and a friend were just out diving the cove kelp beds and i had accidently been kicking the kelp with my fins knocking stuff loose from it and i looked down to see like 5 keepers feeding right next to me. they must know we cant kill them there. one was around 5lbs id say.

wheres swamis?... theres a polespear tourny coming up and i wanna find a good spot that i know ill see some fish for that day. im going to boomers again today.

Swamis Beach is in Encinitas.

La Jolla on Saturday 6/27 had dirty 5 foot viz on in the inside. Outside kelp bed had minimum 50 foot viz. Absolutely unreal for SoCal. Some areas were probably 60+, maybe even 70. That was on the south end.

Life seen: every type of bait imaginable. Black sea bass. A million calicos. Schools of bruiser barracuda. Bat rays munching on mackerel.

Game taken: ~2 pound calico, 7.1 pound barracuda.

FreeRestriction,

what pole tourny is that?

Do you know if Gatku is still conducting their meets?

Thanks in advance.

hey where in la jolla did you fish exactly?.. did you shore dive or were you on a boat?... ive been wanting to spear out just past the boarder of the reserve off the cove but i heard you cant eneter or exit the water with spearing gear from there let alone with a dead fish. theres a million calico's man... last time i was there in the kelp beds i accidently kicked a peice of kelp with my fins and little peices broke loose and there were calico's EVERYWHERE and they got bigger by the second.

You can't get in the water at the cove or spear inside the bouys that mark the boundry of the reserve. Ask any of the lifeguards to show you the borders of the reserve and they'll do it - most of those guys are pretty cool. Exited at the cove one day due to growing surf and lack of desire to swim all the way back to Childrens or Casa... they yelled at us but didn't give us a ticket....

yea i know where the boundries are i was just curious where you enetered and exited.... even entering at the childrens gotta be annoying with all the people hell bent on there damn seals...

how are the seals/sea lions with your catch when you return? for the most part ive had no problems with the seals/sea lions but then again i havent dangled food infront of them 5 ft away either. i always see video's and storys with the sea lions stealing peoples snorkels off there head and stuff... although anytime ive ever seen one it looks terrified of me.

maybe we can get together one time and you can show me the ropes.

Sure. A couple of buddies and I have been down there recently, mostly b/c our boat is in maintenance right now....we've been looking for good shore entry places. Have been hitting the cove area (casa, boomers) as well as up north at Crystal Cove. I would love to get some feedback regarding other decent area for walk in with decent viz....

I think the sea lions tend to be a bit more aggressive than the seals. I don't think I've speared anything they were all that interested in stealing when doing the walk ins tho'...

this lists all the shore entry spots in SOCAL

Scuba Shore Diving Site Listing for: California South, USA West

I use an Omer 5mm 2 piece with integral hood. Works pretty well most of the year, gets hot in the summer tho'...
