It's a bungie isn't it! Sara dives down 5m writes a little message "Sara wuz ere" on a tag there and then they haul it up and stretch it out with the RV before measuring it! 220m rofl New WR rofl

rofl rofl rofl

i wish.. we were marking up and stretching the ropes for freediving, what a painful job!

roflrofl

Why were you stretching it? Is it because of the depth that it effects the rope?

I wouldn't be surprised if they made an operation out of it. They could have setup a leg noose waiting on the sidewalk. Once they get a victim Emma yells hit it!, Sands steps on the gas and bingo another victim and for them, another watch .

I only saw this thread and am now thinking of changing naem here to
"irelands hands"
What a cool name

Do you get rep from any personal comment to you? If someone says "you are without a doubt the most flaming a-hole I've ever seen on this web site," does that give me more rep?

Yup... rofl

Does when it makes me cry with laughter...

The truth behind the rope: You ever had tethered swimming at your school? Its the sport where the physically "uninclined" go to spend their sports afternoon...

Ladies I give you tethered driving... rofl

Yes, but only if at the same time that someone clicks on the little balance on the upper right corner of your post, to register his/her approval or support for what you posted. You also earn rep for the number of posts you accumulate.

One way to improve the system -IMHO- would be to create the possibility of giving different amounts of rep, according to the "value" the giver attributes to the contribution being rewarded. That way, for instance, "somebody" with a rep of 100 hundred could decide to give the whole bunch to whoever she thinks makes a distinct contribution in the area of safety, but only 50, or 25, for another which she considers maybe less important, like jokes or whatever.
I don't know if this can be implemented, but just my 2 cents. (Or maybe we are just giving too much importance to this whole thing, I don't know).

I'm inclined to agree with that.

I only occasionally even notice rep anyway, I can't seem to keep straight what it means or how you get it, and all that matters to me is that a person's post is meaningful to me.

We have a very wide span of interests and geographical locations on this site, and much of the posting is not of direct interest to me. For instance, a person may have earned huge rep points for posts about competitive freediving or spearfishing techniques and equipment useful in Scandinavia, but none of that does much for me, just as my posts about spearfishing techniques and equipment useful in Southern California don't do much for those people.

Our respective reps are meaningless to each other.

Yes and no. When talking of freediving (techinque, safety, breathing, equalization, CO2 tolerance, fins performance et cetera), then geography doesn't matter so much: equalization tips from a Swedish guy may help a Mexican as well as a Danish. Hence the Swedish guy deserves some rep.
Regarding spearfishing I may partly agree with you, Bill: different fish, different environments, guns, cultures, regulations. I've been approaching the american SB forum recently, but I soon realized that I'm an alien there. One italian spearo discussing with a thousand american spearos can make no debate. There's no exchange, because they talk about one peculiar approach to this sport, which is not mine and which I'm totally ignorant about. I'd say the same on an all south african, all australian, bulgarian or even portuguese forum.
But DeeperBlue is different for its mixing so many different and peculiar experiences and attitudes. When you put them all together, you get a wider perspective on the sport, and this helps because a wider perspective pushes you to re-think your crystalized habits and prejudice. I can assure that I've learned something from you about spearfishing, Bill.
So have some rep.

i think this whole rep power issue is kind of overrated...it has no harm but no benefit either...but definitely you cant base credibility on it entirely...sometimes its a result of experience/good advice sometimes a result of popularity..im really not complaining i just think that there are many perks to DB besides the rep... i mean i joined here a year and a half ago and really the mix of cultures/people/habits/experiences etc... is amazing not to mention that there are people here i consider family and we havent even met in person so thats got to be good
cheers

..and there's Marwan to bring some serious sanity into this.
Have some rep for that.

Is perverse of me to enjoy watching someone's rep jump when I really like what they wrote? Is it about power or the positive feedback I get when a student smiles because I praised the work the kid did?

Yes, we are making a mountain out of a molehill, IMO.

Now that I've made all these profound statements about the subject, I guess its time for me to ask once more- how do I check my rep statements?

I just tried clicking on the little scale thing on a couple of my posts, and I got to see one comment on each post.

But I faintly recall that there was some way to see the last few comments about me. Is that correct? And if so, how?

Bill,

click on User CP above in menu. The last reputations are listed there. I use to log into the page anyway, because in this way I see if someone replied to any of threads I am subsribed to (or where I posted too). Only once I check all subscribed threads, I go to the New Posts page to check other new posts.
