There is a relatively new forum at Suunto with a freediving section, so I used the opportunity and posted some feature requests for Mosquito (that I use) - things that I miss in its freediving mode:
If you have the same or similar wishes, and want to support them, it would certainly impress Suunto representatives more, if there were numerous freedivers posting requests, and not only an odd one. So feel free to post your comments there too!

Considering the DCS:
I noticed that when I do mutliple freedives, and download them to my laptop using the SUUNTO divemanager, it does show saturation for different tissue types. From what I can see, it seems to makes sense. You do see the fast tissues saturating faster.

The reason I looked at it was because I felt really tired after a session. And no surprise: that was the one with the highest saturation levels. Makes sense: of course it was simply also the longest session (lots of recreational ~10 m . Max saturation was never above say 30 %. So I still do not know whether the (extra) tiredness was related to N2.

Anyone else any experience/observations in this area?

I agree that it would be fun to have the info on the display (and I see no reason why the mosquito would not be able to do so). But being able to have look afterwards already helps me to see how far away the problem area is.

I do not think that Mosquito or any other DCS computer calculate the nitrogen saturation properly when you freedive or snorkel. First of all, the current models used for the calculation are not quite precise at short repetitive dives to shallow depth, and then the saturation looks quite different when you freedive with just lungful of air taken on the surface, than when breathing thousands of liters from the tank. Additionally, besides the nitrogen saturation, the CO2 saturation and depressurization may play a more important role when freediving. I am afraid a lot of research has to be still done to get the models straight for freediving.

Personally, I doubt that the fatigue you felt was caused by nitrogen saturation - more likely it was the physical effort, apnea and dehydration. That told, I still think that proper models for freediving (both deep and shallow) alone or in combination with scuba would be beneficial.

Hi,

The tiredness may very well be caused by triggering dive reflex during exercise, which leads to extreme levels of tiredness afterwards if your body has not gotten used to it yet.

I train regularly my dive reflex in a 3m pool e.g. with FRC-dives, and even though I don't do much physical work during those training sessions and have usually a good night sleep behind me I get extremely tired afterwards and can have up to 6h 'naps' afterwards. I don't think I can attribute that tiredness to DCS or to N2 accumulation due to 3m max depth, 1,5min max dive time and 5min average surface time.

Usually the body adapts to the dive reflex after a couple of months, so your tiredness may become easier as you do it more often. Anyway, it's still wise to have AT LEAST twice the surface time compared to the dive time to be on the safe side on DCS etc. gas accumulation related problems.

I’ve got serious doubts about Suunto forum. Then I put Mosquito’s bug report at the old one they just killed them. :rcard
So, better to discuss problems at independent location.
At the moment for me much more important the missing of normal freediving interface in D9/D6. :vangry

Thanks for telling it! I would not think thay'd go so low. I just saved my posts and if they bother with deleting them, I'll simply repost them.

Hi Osusim: could you post your Mosquito bug report here if you still have a copy. I have recently bought one and need to trust it completely, or understand its limits. Thanks.
