Hello guys,

A friend and I have decided to start up a new hobby - Spearfishing was mentioned and we both liked the idea....
So basically, I am here researching, best equipment, recommendations, locations (Devon area of the UK) etc.

So if you have some advice, or got some great info please let me know.

Dave.

Hi Dave and Friend,
This is a really good place to start. But before you start to research equipment, you may want to start by asking yourselves if you have a desire for the ocean. What are your drivers? What do you want the game for? Are there groups of spearfishermen in your area that you can join?
Each type of fishing has it's type of equipment and each fisherman likes there particular brand or type or both. I think that you will find that true here and I'm no exception.
I'm recent to Deeper Blue and like this forum very much and have about 30 years of spear fishing and related experiance under my belt. This is a really fun and addictive sport. For someone that loves the ocean it will be very rewarding.
Find out what type of fishing is going on in your area (even the pole and line type) and join a club of spearfishermen if available. "When in Rome......." prevails. Are they using sling guns? Pneumatics? Will you need a reel or a trailing line or just a short line? Long open water style or hole fish? What is the water visbility in your area? Will you be diving locally only or will you travel? Once you know what your game is you will be more prepared to ask what type of set up is the best. Ask the questions from many different resources especially when you are new. All will be factors in your equipment.
One thing that you will have over the experianced guys is enthusiasm and the pure thrill out of your first experiances hunting underwater.
Best regards,
Mark
I've answered a question with a question but it is very pertinent. No sense in buying expensive equipment if it does not suit your needs.
