Marwan, I use a 5mm suit with hood & gloves and I'm fine in all except August when the water gets a bit warm for such a suit (3/4mm probably better for August). As for gun length. I use a 48" biller right now and that's a decent size for this area, although my particular thoughts on the gun are a different matter. I would say anything under 40" is probably too small and anything over 50" is probably too big. For euro guns, I'm guessing, but I have a 55cm sporasub that is too small for most uses. 75cm is a minimum length, 90cm/100cm is probably ideal, and I would guess anything over 100cm is probably overkill. People in this area do favor heavier shafts as some of our fish (striped bass especially) have tough scales. So we tend to use multiple band guns rather than single band rail guns. Another concern with water temp is the stiffness of your fins. If you are used to warm water you may find the fins a bit stiffer up here (water temps --> just my approximations --> may/june 50-55 Fahrenheit, june/july 55-63, july/august 63-67)

great, thanks alex, im guessing a pair of omer ice fins should work fine though..the thought of new grounds, new types of fish is quite exciting i must say..

Daryl those are huge lobsters by the way, nice job. Marwan, are you moving Stateside or are you just visiting?

Omer ice fines are way past perfect. Just watch out for the current unless you have the 250 hp fins made buy yamaha!!!!

Well bit slow writing about it but.........

Went for a dive on long island south cost. The viz was NICE about 50-60 feet. Picked up a load of nice oysters and mussels every were.

Saw two tog that were a little over the size limit but left them alone as had so much shell fish.

Found it hard not to eat all the mussels raw as they were to be cooked the next day. Some of the oysters were bigger then my hole hand.

Water was 47 F (weeeell cold)

47 degree water isn't so bad when its may and the air temp is 55-60 but when the water is 47 and you have to get out into 17 degree air, then you're in for a shocker. Water temp isn't what keeps me out of the water in the winter up here, it's the air temp.

We did get 2.5 inch of snow the next day so glad we didnt dive then! At least there is fish in may i guess.

Looking forward to hitting block island in the spring.

Yeah I want to hit Block Island hard this spring too. Crazy13 will as well if he still checks this forum, it's been a while since he's posted. But i'm sure he'll be ready to dive come May.

*bump*
Just moved back to Southeastern MA, looking for spearfishing or scuba diving buddies in RI.

Looking for scuba or rebreather diving buddies in the Oceanside/San Diego CA area

Wow, way to resurect a dead thread about freediving in RI to ask about scuba diving in CA!

But while I'm here, anyone in RI wanna go spearffishing?
