Hi I have a Riffe Tech here and I’m a newbie to the gun (it has never been loaded and fired). The Locking Pin Riffe Safety has me concerned because it does not seem to work properly. With the pin in it is not supposed to shoot right? I am testing dry without the bands loaded and when pulling the trigger with just the shaft and line wrap it should not deploy the line and unlock the shaft with the safety pin in correct? Am I doing something wrong here? Does the shaft need the bands loaded to make the safety function, or am I completely missing the way the safety works? I'd RTFM but I dont have one and cant find one online. Thanks for any help.

Most people cut the pin off and throw it away. I too believe that there is no need for safeties on spearguns. You cannot rely on the safety. The only safe gun is an unloaded one.

Ah yes I expected this comment and I agree! I am more concerned with the mechanism and if it is working correctly if the factory safety is not working is the trigger mech working right? I need my teeth amongst other things...

In that case, it sounds like you are doing everything right. So maybe you should call up, Jay Riffe and talk to him about it.

Ok will do. I was kind hoping for a That's usually because.. or That’s typical.. answer but I'll see what the 800 line has to say.:head

Is this the pin attached to a coated cable that inserts from the top?

I agree with poly and cut mine off when I had a Riffe, but if inserted, it should definitely keep you from pulling the trigger and releasing the shaft.

Yes sir it is attached with a coated cable, and when in place it does not keep me from pulling the trigger and releasing the shaft. The gun was purchased as unused, is in new condition, and now with what seems to be a defect. I will call Riffe and post back what they say. Thanks for confirming I am not just misunderstanding or doing something incorrect.

If the gun is no older than 3 years. Then warranty should cover the problem. I have dealt with Riffe before about speargun issues. To say the least... they are very efficient at dealing with the problem.

The pin needs to be taken out from it's holding position - then inserted straight down into the mechanism. It takes a bit of force to do this and, when done, the pin sticks up vertically out of the mechanism.

Chris is right. You might be inserting it wrong. It is possible to slip it in with out placing it in front of the necessary internal brace. It may be hard to push in, should be directly vertical.

Good point. I faintly recall that it was possible to insert it the wrong way.

Fondueset - yep that is my problem (user error). Thank you for pointing that out. I am no longer concerned about the mechanism. Loose bands = only real safety, but in a emergency situation where the bands might not be able to be unloaded immediately via shooting or unbanding (ok I know drop the gun) I think the pin is a good thing to have access to. Thanks for everyone’s help.
