Rigging a reel

Hi, I've just got a reel for my Omer Excalibur. Can I connect the monofilament line from the spear directly to the reel line or do I have to use a swivel clip and shock absorber?

I guess its possible to use some sort of knot to connect the mono shooting line to the reel line, but I think most of us use some sort of snap swivel on the reel line.

If your reel line is tangled in kelp or around rocks, you can just detach the shooting line to bring the fish straight up.

No shock absorber is necessary. The drag on the reel should be kept loose enough so that line is just pulled off of the reel if the fish hits the end of the line.

It doesn't. I don't run my line through the line anchor, but many people do. If you run the line through the line anchor, then of course you attach the snap-swivel after the line goes through. Just put it a couple of inches after the line goes through the anchor, and then it will be pointing back towards the line release when you wrap the line.

not to contradict Bill who indeed mentions the classic approach, but I put a small hoop in the back of the mono (crimped) and tie my reel line to it with a bowline knot. No swivel makes for a straighter shooting spear and no "clack clack" as the swivel moves against the guns tube. If I have to disconnect I cut and tie again.

In agreement, I have also stopped running my line through the muzzle eyelet as it would cause occasional tangles.

Thanks a lot for this info actually what i am doing with my reel is stupid!!! i am just losing the rope in the reel for the first shoot!!! Just now i understood the right way 4 that thanx heeps guys

this I think, is a way common mistake, and speaguns never come with a "rig this way guide". never shoot direct from the reel, put two or three loops around the muzzle and trigger activated line release, then tighten the reel up. hope it makes sense. ask if it does not.

Here is a photo of what azapa said. All of the mono shooting is wrapped between the line anchor under the muzzle and the trigger activated line release. When you shoot, the shaft should not have to pull line from the reel.

I don't use a reel but I connect my muzzle bungee to the spear-line with a double-sheet bend. Ulysses mentioned that he uses a regular sheet-bend & checks & tightens it as necessary. The single sheet-bend should be relatively easy to untie, if you need to untie the spear to pull it through a fish. The double is more secure but also more awkward to untie but I have those jazzy Omer spears with counter-sunk floppers/barbs, so pulling a spear back through a fish is normally not a problem.

I always use a shock absorber/ muzzle bungee. It puts less stress on the line when shot and helps those times when i get too excited and bully the speared fish in to hard. Then bungee helps stop the spear from pulling out.

I do not use swivels any more for all the reasons already mentioned. I also tie on to the real line using a bowline though i tie it with a quick release. Kind of like how you tie your shoes crossed with a bowline. This is so i can change spears if bent or dull point, or if stuck anywhere.

I am using a rob allen 100 cm , where the release mechanism is right behind the place where the reel sits. Any suggestions for the perfect reel setup for that?
