Hey i am thinking of puchasing a Rob Allen signature series carbon railgun, probably in one of the larger blue water sizes. Just wanting some opinions/reviews on this or recomendations for other options.

Surprised nobody replied. You might want to try searching the forum for earlier discussions. The SA spearos are a good source of info on such things (Oz, Florida, Californian , Hawaiians & Polynesians too). Threads with contributions by forum member Miles would be a good place to look. He is "living the dream" as a Bluewater Tuna fisherman with a passion for railguns and first hand experience of most/all. I think they consider 110cm-120cm a good all round gun out there, so bluewater sizes would probably be bigger sizes: 130/140/150cm ...I think somebody even mentioned 170! When sizes needs start going much above 140, I think folk often start looking at big multi-band wooden canons - the American spearos would be the ones to ask about those (e.g. Bill McIntyre), although Miles also uses SA Tommy Botha wooden tuna guns.

You might also try contacting Rob Allen, either through the forums Private Mail - he is a forum member - or via their website: Rob Allen spearguns, railguns and other spearfishing and freediving accessories.

If you are set on a railgun then you might as well get the new Pelaj with the 3 band muzzle or an Edge spergun for that length.

I have 3 RAs. From the 80cm for pok'in around the rocks and sandy bottoms. The 100cm for in closer to shore and the 120cm for the kelp and open water. They are all the TUNA series and Alum barrel. As far as the EURO style gun go they are by far my favorite gun.

Dead straight shooter and tough as a Brick S**T house. I have changed them all over to the Hammerhead open muzzle and made my own 5/8 of 16 mm bands. These are just personal preferences though, these guns are ready for action right out of the box!!

I would guess that the carbon would only be a nicer upgrade to an already great gun.

OK its 5:30 AM and I am running out to my garage and pullin out my speargun bags to check on trigger mech and barrrel interchangeability?!?!?

Ok it appears that if you swapped the Rabi to the RA you would have to drill a new hole for the pin that holds the Rabi to the barrel and then have to plug the 2 screw holes that are left from the RA trigger mech.

I also think that the Rabi trigger mech will sit further back on the gun as the RA trigger mech kind of wraps the barrel and the Rabi is just a straight plug that goes into the barell ( similar to a muzzle)

I am using the RA Vecta (blue) and the Rabi Steath as examples.

Still not sure on the barrel OD and ID and the wall thickness yet though they look very similar. I also notice that the the Rail are very different the RA being extruded and actually part of the barrel and I believe the Rabi is some type of attatched rail?

The line releases are will come with the trigger mech and handle.

Se its time like these that I am glad I took all my Spearguns out from under my bed and put them in my garage. Beacuse my wife would have been really pissed off if I woke her up to get this information!!!!!!HAHA

That is mainly why I wanted an RA barrel because it comes build-in and in my opinion you have less chance of derailing or something of that matter. Hey accidents happen and you never know what can happen to you I would not like my rail coming out of my barrel.

I do love the apex trigger mech though I prefer to have it rather than the RA Vecta.

Sorry but does the shaft sit in correctly, (aligned) with the RA barrel and Rabi trigger mech?

ArmandozX (my long lost brother Armandoz! ¿Qué pasa?), RA have significantly improved the trigger mech. for the Vector handle. Just fitted mine <-follow this link to the thread. Suggest that you look into getting a replacement a.s.a.p. -- keep the faith brother.

Hey X I checked your installation post out! Nice work but, was your gun out of warranty? I mean you stated that RA has a 5 year warranty on them so why not let them do it? I'm glad you fixed your trigger mech though!

PS: I also saw the new trig mech slightly different from what I saw on your installation pics! I wonder if I should send mines in for replacement. However, I don't think it's needed any time soon I would considered it once my guns gives me problems again (hopefully never again) That's how much I trust RA products.

Wow, you're right - the website must have changed very recently, within the last week I reckon. Pity, I really liked the simple, clean layout of the old one. Could have just used a little more content & regular updates. Still, perhaps the new one is better. Perhaps not, it looks more like the old Rabitech site: very poor use of screen real estate (a real pain to use on a laptop), too many clicks to navigate, 2 clicks to each speargun product & no over view/summary page displaying the range (muzzle section looks good though). Looks like they have some interesting new products:

  • - new plastic reel
  • - new flashers
  • - the new open muzzle
  • - new crimping tool
  • - new spear tip option(reckon I have a rock-tip but a tri-cut might be required for big mullet!)
  • - new slip tip
  • - new mini-fin option.
  • - the new speed stringer looks new & different - this is something different & beyond the normal "speed needle" as they call it.
  • - new slip tip!!!
  • - improved reef hook (I think)
  • - "Ghost Leader", under floats - interesting idea, a clear leader at the end of your float line to aid hiding in ambush/aspetto/aguetto. Must give that a try A good way to extend a short float line too hmm 10m float line + 5m ghost leader)
  • - new 18mm rubber (20mm rubber is now recommended for "longer guns" - maybe they saw my posts!)

Yes, my railgun was well within warranty. All Vector handles are probably still under warranty.

Re. Why not let them do it? The quickest, simplest, best option (for everyone) was to get it sent to me. I installed it immediately, it took less than 5 minutes all told. V. simple. It hadn't occurred to me that I might want to swap a trigger mech but it would be quite practical to do that on a trip if necessary.

Response / RA new products / "Ghost Leader"

The new Ghost Leader & Speed Stringer have captured my imagination. With the various Rob Allen float & float-line products you could put together some surprisingly sophisticated rigs.

If I understand correctly(?) a rig for big pelagic fish might look like this

large float (e.g. 11 litre solid)
breakaway pouch
Break-away pouch.
float line
11 litre solid float
bungee
floatline
gun-mounted break-away rig & steel line release

long railgun


(Although the Tommy Botha float system looks like it might be simpler to use and manage).

Float system for reef fishing:

8/11 litre inflatible float or solid float with diver down flag & lead ballast
speed stringer
Speed stringer & needle.
floatline
Ghost leader with flasher
Ghost leader flasher.
speed needle
short railgun

Just made myself a couple of trial Ghost Leaders. I don't have any thick clear mono or crimps but I do have several thicknesses and colours of strimmer line, some whipping cord and superglue! I made a 2.5mm x 12ft/3.6m one and a 1.6mm x 8ft/2.4m Ghost Lead. I had been thinking of shortening my 20m float line (or buying a 10m). So I have cut the 20m into a 12m & an 8m line, spliced new end loops and made a new lightweight winder. So I will have a shortline (8m + 2.4m = 10.4m = 33 ft) and a longer line (12m + 3.6m = 15.6m = 51 ft).
