russian spearguns I found the best

It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Great write up Roland.

I'm looking forward to giving it a shot at next summer's Freedive-A-Palooza. I have a Cyrano 970 right now, but find that it's a bit too long for our local visability. A true mid-handle would be pretty nice for the weeds.

Is Fred using the Cyrano 770, or a Sten gun?

Jon

Cyranos have nearly doubled in price over the past few months!
The trigger mech on the pneumatics in the review is a very clever design. As is the grip. They look very well made. Thanks for the review!

Thanks Carp dominator, I really enjoyed reading your post, I would be interested in one of the longer models.

Jon,
I use the cyrano 700.. and the sten mini mini.. my brother has a sten 54.. I haven't tried out the gun roland posted about, but if roland says its good.. I'm sure it is .. I know I want to get one that's for sure.. seeing the prices of the mares is bad news nowadays except that I have one... that's good news.

These pneumatics are the only way to go I think. Sure, not as pretty wood as ted's.. but hey, sometimes it's not all about the looks...

granted.. this russian gun looks like a piece of art though.
Fred

Speaking of Ted sporting wood, you should see the new gun he just bought.

I think it's an Alexander. It took a few months, and lots of emails, to get it how he wanted, but I think turned out pretty nice.

It's way out of my price range, and you could get a few of those Russain guns for what he paid, but it sure is pretty. Maybe too pretty to shoot fish with.

Jon

teds gun was custom made using the alexander mech and handle - maybe he'll post the site of the guy who made it - I don't have it handy.

Roland - if some of us decide we want these guns - can you act as go between? I emailed the maker - but I have a feeling he doesn't speak english.
With the dollar a little stronger against the euro its not such a bad time to do business.

In Italy it's still MUCH cheaper than an Omer HF bandgun: you can find 123 euro Cyrano 700, 132 euro Cyrano 850, 154 euro Cyrano 1100. Left alone the Cressi SL 100 for 78 euro...

the 700 is now $324.95!! Almost 256 euro! The Cyranos are good guns but not that good. Same size sten is $167.95 and the cressi is only 129.95. I think Mares can kiss the Cyrano good bye at these prices. A few months ago they were around $180
At these prices you can get another gun with a mamba kit for less than a cyrano costs.

I did not catch, what kind of gun is kayuk: regular, aqua air, vacuum?

Having speared in Russia for more than a decade, I would like to commend the author of this report for his knowledge and objectivity
Virginia guns are indeedvery poor quality
Zelinka hydrovacuum guns are made by too many people to hope that you can get spare parts
Kayuk is indeed a better gun than Virginia by far, but also kicks up more because it is lighter than Sea Bear. But, given that freshwater is often murky in Russia - you don't need much of a precision. And the midde position of the handlebar also makes it easier to maneuver in sunken trees where fish often hide in Russian rivers
And you can pump enough air into it to spear carps easily - I speared carps in the Volga with my Kayuk. The only major problem of my Kayuk is that rubber seals had to be replaced too often - every month, month and a half and often on site - you would pump air on shore and then discover that there is no pressure.

Greetings to you too, Carp Dominator!
Mine was custom-made - it was about 45 cm - I asked Yuri for this length specifically to hunt in sunken trees, etc - it is much easier to maneuver. Both my gun and my pal's Kayuk had this problem with O-rings, easy to fix, but irritating.
