Hi Guys,

On the weekend I went spearfishing and we shot a grouper at -19m. My buddy got slight samba, and thinks he shouldn't dive for at least 2 months as body will go into samba/hypoxia at an ealier stage without warning. Is this true? I think he is being paranoid.

What are your opinions?

Thanks

Hi Trelos,
was it a Samba or a blackout ?
If you blacked out you probably won't remember it, your buddy would have likely seen you blow out air, and usually tell from someone's eye's and face. Anyway don't know where this 2 month stuff comes from ?
If it was a blackout then yes don't dive the rest of the day but no reason why you can't dive the next day if you take it easy, to be safer maybe have a couple of days off. And if it was only a Samba I don't see any reason for not being able to dive the next day. If someone has a bad blackout and took in water you have to go to hospital just to make sure you don't get secondary drowning. The water iritates the lungs and cause fluid build up. If you took in only a little bit of water you may still want to have a few days off just to be a bit careful. As for hypoxic memory sounds a bit like BS to me.

I had a blackout a few months ago while training for competition and overshot my depth by mistake. I basically had a day off from training but still did some easy diving. The next day I did a near PB static, the blackout didn't effect me at all. There was someone else at the comp that had a blackout in training and after their performance really suffered, I think it was more mental then physical though.

Cheers,
Wal

I don't dive on the same day as a samba or BO, but the next day hasn't caused any problems. Of course it may not be a good idea to push the limits for a few days, I don't know.

I had a samba doing a static during the Performance Freediving clinic and they said I was fine to dive the next day. I went diving the next morning and a couple of more times during that same week without any problems.
