is this spot too far to kick out on a boogie board ?
is it a good spot or is there some other spots closer to the beach. im staying at San Clemente next month by the pier with family and want to have a try at spear fishing. im new and still a lil weary of open water and sharks eating me :)

i got my brother to give this spearfishing a try with me and we were wondering what/where around there we can try to spear a fish.
we need to show the wives something for the money we spent on poles fins snorkel etc...they dont belive well catch anything, maybe ill buy a fish and stick it on my pole to save face :)

That artificial reef extends from the pier to San Mateo Point at the south end of town, and a very thick kelp bed has grown on it this year. We've even seen some white sea bass over 50 pounds there, although those would be out of your league with your present equipment and experience level.

I'm afraid I always approach it from the outside in a boat, so I don't have a feel for how far the inside is from the beach. However, I think it might not be too bad a swim.

I think a good start for you would be a place called Seal Rock. If you walk out on the pier and look south, you'll see a very large rock sticking out of the water. Its not too long a swim from shore, and you stand a good chance of seeing some sheephead there. I don't know the name of the street to go down for beach access, but it shouldn't be too hard to find. The inside edge of the kelp bed on the artificial reef is probably not far beyond the rock.

ok i know that rock your talking of (seal rock) iv been vacationing san clemente last few years and during my morning runs / swims i see the surfers out there infront of that rock.
thanks

oh and theres no way id attempt to shoot a big fish even if i got the chance. id prob miss. heck im just hoping to see a fish. iv done some snorkling last few weeks to get the feel of the water around luguana and havent seen a fish yet.

well judging by your map and its scale it looks to be about 1/4 mile exactly

linda lane is just north of the pier and has some spotty rock structure with alot of sand bass and some halibut however viz is unreliable.. seal rock and the artificial reef kelp deffinately have the creep factor but youll be fine have fun and if im around send me a message and maybe ill roll with ya

I'd have to agree with you guys on the recent blooms. Entire weekend was shot because of rust-like conditions on the OC coastline. I'm afraid that the recent "flash" warming in water temps might be the culperate (but not confirmed yet). WTH?

What a real bummer when I had such high hopes at having flatter weekend conditions (Lord knows the Pacific's been VERY active since Winter time) and decent viz. Now I'm playing the world's smallest violin at my luck. Go figure!!!

I'm just hoping that it doesn't last as long as the red tide of 2008 which hung around for at least 2 solid months. Let us all pray to the Gods to send help to all us "fish outta water".

ahhh so thats what all that rust water was i swam threw. "alge bloom" "red tide" . i had to google them terms. dam im new to this. there was a patch of that at corona del mar last weekend.

on another note i took out my polespear only to loose the dam tip after bout 10 minutes LOL
i must of not had screwed it on tight. that sucked but atleast it gave my wife a laugh.

doh
