Hello you guys, is there anyone freediving in N.California?
We live in SF, and are looking for more people diving around the area!

Peace,
Derick

Hey Derick!
Sorry for the late reply. Im in the east bay area about 35 miles from downtown SF. Id love to get together with other freedivers. Maybe we can set something up. :)

That would be great. Do you know any Freediving locations in our area?
Peace,
Derick

Not really. I just movies here in October, and havent been diving since. There is a group called NorCal SkinDivers, but they mostly spearfish.

Do you know of any places? I took a hike up to a really nice lake today. The only prob is that the trail is 3 miles long. There is a camp up there, so it would probably be better for a weekend trip.

Edit: Here is the link for NorCal. CanCal, another club is having a spearfish tourney on saturday.I probably wont go, since its really far away. (in Cambria)
Anyway...

Not sure if you are still looking. I haven't lived in the area since 2003 but this is where I use to go.

Gerstle Cove and Stillwater Cove just north of Fort Ross. Call Salt Point 707-847-3222 for latest visibility. Can't be certain that is the number but there is a recording that is updated everyday.

Fort Bragg also has some nice coves to dive. Anything between Fort Ross and Fort Bragg has some nice spots but many are blocked by private land. You can explore by rappelling down though.

Monterey Bay of course is another option. But there seems to be more sea life up north.

If you are not use to kicking out in strong surge and rocks ... take your time and watch the conditions. It is very easy to get washed into rocks.

Derick,

Most people in the Bay Area either dive in Monterey / Carmel or up in Sonoma / Mendocino north of SF. There's not a lot of diving in between, specifically from Bodega Bay down to Ano Nuevo, which along with the Farallon Islands is called The Red Triangle - shark areas, that is.

I mostly dive in Monterey & Carmel because it's closer, but do head up north a few times a year.

Check your PM.

Peter S.

Thanks for the info!

When you say "Shark areas" do you mean "Great Whites" like on Farallon?

Derick

Great!! I will check out these spots!!

Have you ever tried anything along Pacifica?

Peace,
Derick

I never have. What you want is a nice rocky shoreline with some kelp beds. It helps if it is somewhat protected such as a cove.

Derick, you'll find lots of people freediving along the Sonoma coast. Most are abalone diving and/or spearfishing. There are some that specialize in halibut as well. What are you looking for?

hello everyone
i'm new here and live in San Francisco and would love to connect with some
peeps from the bay...
lets get wet !!!!

Hi guys!
I'll be moving to the Bay Area in september. I have an Eliossub 5mm wetsuit with nylon lining, and was wondering if its going to be too thick / hot in sunny CA? But waters are not that warm, I suppose.

In Sept on a real calm day the water may get over 15 on the surface but you can always open the beaver tail. lol
