I am a recent convert to these forums as a fantastic resource. All my diving is done up here in nor cal and am just looking to hasten the learning curve for spearfishing and setups. Have been ab diving for about 6 years and its about time I move up to a speargun, not that slings are bad at all.

Greetings,
Good to see another diver from California. I am down in San Luis Obispo County and I drive up to monterey county sometimes for the diving up there. I also recently started spearfishing and I love it! I mostly dive the kelp beds and go for rockfish and lings

, but I also want to start looking for some halibut. I have a three band JBL xhd that works great for what I do and it was cheap too. Well best of luck bro, let me know if you make it down this way sometime and maybe we'll do some diving.

sounds good, Kale. I do know of many good halibut spots but have yet to spear one. do you ever get up to Big Sur?

Yeah,
Big Sur has great diving

,if the swell is down. I know a few spots up there for shore diving and I just rigged up my kayak for spearfishing too.I took it out today down here and it works great, speared a big sheephead and saw a few others. Anyways, I have an extra sit on top ocean kayak so if you want to come try it out or just do some shore diving in Big sur we can set it up.
Peace,
Kale

I actually have a cobra fishndive rigged for fishing and ab diving. Have used it quite a bit for that in mendo. What are some of the gear you got on there for spearfishing? I think one of my buddies and I are headiing down to big sur for a day trip this weekend. probably saturday eve sunday morn. I dont know where we will be but we will probably dive sat eve and fish and dive all day sunday. We dont have a campground and might be roughing it for a night. If I knew where we would be I would say cruise on up.

Amadeo,
Sounds like you guys are going to have a great time this weekend. Bummer I'm working . That's great that you have a dive 'yak. I just started diving off mine, put some extra straps to clip gear to and an extra kelp anchor. A couple buddies and I are getting a group campsite in Big Sur in august, we'll bring the kayaks and go fishing and diving. You guys should cruise down and join us if you can. Good luck this weekend.

Hey ab10, you don't happen to dive in the kelp near Steamer Lane, do you? I saw someone out there on Saturday, when the sea was pretty calm. Santa Cruz is one of my favorite places :). Monterey is fun to dive.

Bat Ray, No that was'nt me. I was down in Big Sur doing some kayak fishing and spearing. The rod and reel stunk, allthough when we pulled up we saw another fisheman cleaning a 40 lb flattie. Wow! He said he got it in about 30 feet of water so we dove the sand fingers but saw none. Just a starry flounder, small. This was all good and fun until I spotted a dead dolphin floating with buzzards in the kelp bed next to the channel we were diving. Time to go in! I did spear the biggest cabezon that I ever caught by any method, so that was cool.

:( That would be a sad thing to see. It must be interesting to dive Big Sur, though.
