This week Senator Cory Booker’s (D NJ) Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act (S 1106) passed through the Senate, included as an amendment to a Senate legislative package, known as the Endless Frontier Act. The House companion bill HR 2811 would cease the consumption and the trade of shark fins in the United States and help protect sharks from overfishing. Sponsored by Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan (D-MP) and Michael McCaul (R -TX) is now under consideration to pass through the Congress.
A 2021 study published in the scientific journal Nature indicates found that 71% of sharks and rays have been fished out of the sea in the last past 50 years. At In addition to this decline in total abundance, at least 25% of shark species are now threatened with extinction.
One major threat to sharks is comes from overfishing and as bycatch.
In the last few decades, populations of large sharks have crashed driven largely by the high demand for their fins to make the Asian delicacy shark fin soup.
The Shark Fin Trade Elimination Act will help save sharks and protect the associated health of our oceans and support sustainable US fisheries by reducing fishing pressure, particularly on endangered sharks. It i’s time we act in the interests of wildlife and ocean health for the survival of all species. We can start with saving sharks from extinction.
