Yesterday, the Los Angeles Fathomiers club held its annual Scramble Meet. Divers may start at dawn and must have the fish back in the circle at a park overlooking the ocean in San Pedro by 3 PM. A total of three fish, with only one of each species, may be entered, and total weight of the three fish determines the winner. Competition is open to all comers- you don't have to be a member of the club.

I'm not much into competitions, but I always enjoy attending the weigh-in, where I see old acquaintances and connect new faces to names I see on Spearboard. (I wish I could say that I see people from DB, but not yet.)

Yesterday I took a few photos at the weigh-in. I'm afraid I don't even have the official results, but I think the winner, Paul Romanowski, had a total weight in the high 60 pound range, with his biggest fish being a white sea bass in the high 30s. In general, the fish entered were white sea bass, yellowtail, sheephead, and calico bass.

If you live in the Los Angeles area, I highly recommend the Fathomiers as a way to meet divers and gain knowledge. They are much more welcoming than another well known club in the area, and have some very highly skilled divers among the membership.

The official results will probably be published on Spearboard today, and I'll put them here when available. Meanwhile, I thought at least some of you might like seeming some photos that may capture the atmosphere at the event. Even if you don't belong to the club, this weigh-in would be a great way to meet people next year.

Some sheephead, white sea bass, and the victory stand.

Some of the attractive crowd; a diver showing one of the many great raffle prizes; participants cleaning their catch.

Awesome photos Bill.

Looks like a fun time was had by all. Wish i coulda been there. But diving in 130 foot vis in 84 degree water is just too much fun to come home from.

Is that Balta's girlfriend checking out that skinny blond guy? :blackeye

Balta's girlfriend is that tall "healthy" girl standing right next to Balta- the one who looks like she does a lot of bench presses. I don't think he let her get more than a few feet from him all day, and I don't blame him. :)

Nice photos, Bill! It looks like it was an enjoyable event. The fish look delicious...Mmmm, white seabass...
