I vaguely recall someone saying that you had to be careful Scuba diving and Freediving on the same day. Any reason for concern?

Yes, a lot. You can go freediving before a scuba dive, but freediving after a scuba dive it is probably the best way to get to see the insides of a recompression chamber for real. The risk of DCS is very real and very high, because after a scuba dive your tissues are stil high on N2 and the best way to get it out in bubble form is to do a lot of short up and down dives.

Freediving after a scuba dive is the same as flying after a scuba dive, you just don't do it.

I've argued this case before and some people don't agree but in my opinion depending on the type of Freediving you are doing and the type of Scuba you should be careful about freediving before Scuba aswell.

Scuba diving before freediving is worse than the other way around but as an example a spearo doing repetitive 20-30metre dives or a constant weight freediver doing and 80metre dive or No-limits diver doing a great depth all would give the diver some residual nitrogen and no Scuba table would protect you as its like comparing apples and oranges because ascent rates etc are ignored whilst freediving.

A bit extreme but if you can get bent from just freediving [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taravana]Taravana - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] Breathhold Diving:Taravana then surely it follows you must be at increased risk if you Scuba afterwards.

I never do deep freediving and decompression Scuba on the same day for that reason. I definately don't freedive after Scuba atall.

Nikko, to avoid complications and to not have to worry just don't do it.

Never freedive after scuba on the same day - because you're setting yourself up for what is essentially a rapid ascent loaded with nitrogen in your tissues.

To be the safest, I would advise NOT mixing the two disciplines (regardless of order) on the same day.

cheers,

kp

Better to go drinking afterward anyway. :)

LOL rofl
Or just stop SCUBAing entirely! Just kidding, but when I was weaning myself off SCUBA and becoming a freediver, the fear of DCS or even negative effects unseen from microbubbles troubled me more and more, to the point that I just don't breath compressed gas at all.

Snorkelling after SCUBA is obviously fine, just no diving.
Cheers.

Thanks gang, that clears it up.
Erik I was going to phase out scuba all together but then found out that the primitive island holiday i choose for freediving just happens to be a half hour boat ride from 8+ shipwrecks. Discovery Divers Dive site description
I only get on Scuba if there is something worth seeing.
Thanks again gang.

Looks like a great set of wrecks to dive on amigo, have a great trip!

best way is to use a dive computer and treat freediving after scuba like flying. Don't freedive until your computer would let you fly i.e. you are clear of nitrogren bubbles

I had a very nasty bend a few years ago from freediving 16 hours after scuba diving - if I'd followed my computer, I'd have waited at least 24, probably more. It is not fun and I still have some damage from it 6 years later.

Thats good news! On impulse i ordered a Sunnto D4, good to see i have another reason to have it.
