[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xllfJNQFOuo]Cooper the chimp goes scuba diving - YouTube[/ame]

I think he would have more fun with his friends & family in the jungle!

I guesse it shows how it is possible to manipulate these creatures away from what comes naturally but weren't most of these experiments carried out in the 60s!

I think a lot of us deep down would admit to wanting to have a pet of such high intelligence but even deeper down we also know how wrong it would be?

Sorry but that vid makes me very sad...

I can guarantee the chimp did not decide he wanted to do this... there were many behavioural changes that may not have looked as pretty as this vid...

Kinda wish the idiots gave him an ak47 instead of a tank...

I don't know if Cooper the chimp has ever been in the jungle. Cats, dogs, gerbils, fish etc. are often kept by humans, its part of human nature to want to try to tame/domesticate/train 'cute' baby animals (llamas, reindeer, etc).

I'm more concerned about the destruction of the rainforest habitat, as it is constantly being eroded by human "progress", which is often focused on short-term gains (money, food) rather than long-term sustainability. (I'm a forester/naturalist).

I have no idea what might be wrong or sad about a chimp in a rocket breathing air or a chimp in a pool breathing from an air tank or a chimp climbing a tropical forest tree chasing a monkey so as to tear its head off and eat lunch.

Start from there then.

Yes, dog were used to look after the sheeps, cats to keep place clean of rats. What's the point in a chimp getting a PADI first level is still obscure to me.

I'm concerned about both.

I have no idea what might be wrong or sad about a chimp in a rocket breathing air or a chimp in a pool breathing from an air tank or a chimp climbing a tropical forest tree chasing a monkey so as to tear its head off and eat lunch.

If you have no idea about those two sentences i'm not the one trying (and failing) to give you one...

take care.

1 Start what?
2 Yet people keep sheep & rats as pets too. Humans are domesticators.
3 Easy to say so (many do).
4 the moral high road is filled with potholes & muddy puddles... I prefer the blue

I do not know why Cooper should move to the jungle. He seems to be pretty happy in his pool. He clearly enjoys the experience. I would agree with the arguments that he'd be better in the jungle if it was just a circus stunt made for the entertainement of humans, and to enrich his captors, but this seems to be the exact opposite. I may be wrong, but it looks he enjoys it quite a bit.

Besides it, it might be very difficult to fill scuba tanks in a jungle, so there is no point in moving there.

Even if Cooper is a domesticated chimp, he still can't understand all the verbal instructions, and could do anything at any time with his scuba kit on... like the chimp who ran off with AK47.

Seems like a dangerous business for the chimp. Whether he was brought up in a jungle or a zoo , chimps would never be able to scuba dive safely and may die in the process. Just because some human wants to get a kick out of it and post his chimp who can do tricks on YouTube.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I've seen tubies of scuba cats and scuba dogs, but none installing the mouthpiece by themselves after being shown.

All diving is potentially dangerous, as is walking across the street, or swinging from tree branches.

Sorry mate, but they way you are defending the footage it sounds like its yours?

Anyway, all your arguements are a joke as the assumption that a chimp has comparable intelligience or cognitive capacity to domesticated animals if laudible!!

Seriously, you cannot see the difference between a cat and a chimp?

Sheesh...

depends on the characteristics to be differentiated
Sheesh...

hmmm

I know I cover my eyes with my hand like that when I am having a great time, oh no wait, he DOES look uncomfortable.

Like to make a few points.

1. We have all been domesticated from being in the jungle. Are you happier or would you rather run naked through the jungle searching for snakes, lizards or slugs for lunch.

2. We also experiment and copy. The fact that we scuba dive is because we are copying the first person who invented it. I think a possible scenario is the chimp's seen someone in the pool with scuba, thought "that looks cool," and decided to have a go.

3. And just about everyone who surfaces from underwater in a pool or ocean, wipes their eyes to remove the chlorinated or salt water as it iritates them.

I sometimes have to do things I don't like doing at work. That's real cruelty.
