HI I LIVE IN BROOKLYN BUT IM LOOKING FOR PEOPLE THAT WOULD LIKE TO DO SOME SCUBA SPEARFISHING ANYTIME SOON, BUT ONLY SOMEWHERE IN NY
IF INTERESTED LET ME KNOW brooklynmazi@hotmail.com

thx for all replies

Hi McMazi, you will find quite a few people here on DB who freedive spear, maybe in your area, but not many who scuba spear. There are other forums for them though, I can't remember the names.

Hi , I also live in Brooklyn, I just bought my own gear and want to go scuba spearfishing. I am a newbie and haven't gone spearfishing before, but want to get into spearfishing. If anybody wants company and doesn't mind teaching me the basics , please contact me at vldviper@yahoo.com. Thanks

why not its just im sick of trying to increase my bottom time to stay longer , pushing urself to limits why not make it easier and enjoy divin n fishin at the same time. Its like drivin a car or bickle

I think the reason for a lot of us finding the freediving side of spearing important, is the sense of levelling the ground and creating an almost level playing field between you and your quarry. Not to mention the environmental impact it would have if everyone just cruised around on scuba taking as much as they could. Plus what could be more rewarding than training yourself to a high level and honing your skills well enough where bottom time doesn't need to be such a factor?
I am just a beginner myself but training and feeling yourself progressing is great, and that feeling can only get better when you start putting meals on your table that you feel you have really earned, with a hunting story to tell while you eat :)

yea but up to how long , when u are a beginner u can still see a progress but soon or later u wont be able to do it more then ur body alowed you, and then u will be just freediving and later it will get bored, the wholoe idea , concept will loose its charm.
thats why i preffer scuba spearfishing, and as long as we got ocean there always be planty for everyone. scuba spearfishing is a way to go , easy , relaxing , pleasure. and for the training part i go to gym ;)

Yeah I do see your point on one hand but on the other you take away from the true spirit of the sport if youre just cruising around and making it so easy, and with no offence intended, it is unbelievably short sighted to say as long as we have the ocean there will be plenty for everyone. Thanks to commercial fishing we're looking at quite the opposite in fact, which is part of the reason a lot of us like the fair fight, totally selective and sustainable fishing that is our sport.
With the right training and commitment anybody (within reason) should be able to get the depths and bottom times for safe spearfishing, talk to any of the experienced spearos and they will say the same, if you have the right technique there just really is'nt any need to be able to hold your breath for too much longer than a minute.
Anyway, to each their own but I think you will find that 99% of the spearos (at least on this forum...and the other ones ive been on..) do it on one breath and will save their scuba gear for sight seeing if they have any at all.
Sorry if I sound all preachy and like I'm having a dig at you, I just felt I owed it to the sport to keep it pure and how its supposed to be.
Happy hunting anyways, hope you find a buddy in the end..... Though you'd prob have more luck finding someone minus the tanks :p
Peace

Wow...I am nearly speechless reading this...but will not go there....
@TreachCon..... bang-on mate.
I'd rather not shoot anything than shoot small fish or use air.
Sure each to his own...etc etc...but it is not just about killing something to eat is it? It is meant to be a sport...
Mcmazi....I do not want to preach mate, but try thinking holistically...Healthy body & mind, environment, sustainability etc. If you want to make it easier and probably cheaper, you could always just buy your fish.
Maybe you should do some research and investigate what really is happening in our oceans...Yes, they will always be there, but at the rate things are going, there will be nothing left in them...

MCMAZI, seems like a lot of fuss over something that is supposed to be fun.
I'm 54 years old and have been a recreational diver for at least half of that.
If you want to SCUBA spearfish great, if you want to Free Dive also great.
Maybe instead of the semi-smarmy put downs, one of the Free Divers could offer to show you what it's all about. As for SCUBA spearfishing, I live on Long Island and do occasionally dive the Atlantic Beach Bridge. There is usually quite a few divers at Beach 8th Street on good condition days. Many of them would be more than happy to offer any tips that might be of help, or dive with you and show you the ropes.
Leave me a post if this was helpful, hopefully no one takes offense, but if they do, well,
#$@& - em if they can't take a joke
