Another 2 cents: I know you can't legally collect abalone on scuba in Southeast Alaska.

The abs here in southeast are pretty shallow- some people wait for a low tide and collect in rubber boots or waders (our tides can change as much as 24 feet), but you can freedive and find more and larger. You can find plenty in less than 60 feet of water. FYI- the abalone here are much smaller than in California, but our daily resident bag limit is 50. I think the abalone here are a little nicer to eat too.

I've had no desire to spearfish while on scuba. I know the bubbles startle fish and scuba has it's own challanges, but it's never had any appeal to me (yet). But in the range that I normally freedive (20-30ft) right now, I could stay down on scuba for 2 hours per tank. It does not seem as sporting as freediving to me. If I have to fight fish on scuba, I have time to work for the most part. Freediving you have to decide if you don't get the perfect shot, can I still get to the surface and then still land the fish.

I guess it's just my mindset, I see scuba as observation, freediving as hunting. Eventually I'll see freediving for more, as I improve.
