Sea Sniper…Snipping measurements

I’ve just joined the Sea Sniper club:martial:martial:martial...…got me a Reef Pro 130 cm………...or is it???:rcard

Just to clear matters, the gun is beautiful, the on-line store I bought it from have excellent service …Brent at kayakfishingsupplies.com is a great guy

Although the Reef Pro 130 cm is stated as 130 Stock Length…….the gun I received looked too long for a 130 cm so I measured it and it came out to be 150 cm in stock length,………… about 15% longer than I asked for.

I feel there is some kind of unintentional mistake here….something went wrong when the people at Sea Sniper tried to express an American made gun in Euro size.

American size their guns by measuring it from butt to muzzle......i.e., Stock Length…….whereas, European guns are measured according to Barrel Length……..Let’s take an example.

If we take an RA 100 cm (although it’s made is S.Africa but Rob uses European sizes) it translates to:
1- The BARREL of the gun is 100 cm
2- The total length of the gun is 120 cm...which in this case is called Stock Length in the US.

PLEASE.................Correct me if I’m wrong

So how did a stock length of 130 cm become 150 cm

I know a lot of guys on this forum have Reef Pro’s and I would like to hear their side of the story.

I issue is because there isn't a true industry standard for measuring gun length. Each company does it differently. You are under the impression tht american speargun manufacturers list gun lengths by the total length of the gun from butt to muzzle, and although some american companies do this, it is not the official rule. Some companies list the length of the gun from trigger to where the bands go through the muzzle and still other companies list the length from the last notch or fin on the shaft to the where the bands go through the muzzle (exact band stretch).

shouldnt "stock length" have one meaning though, ie the length of the wood stock?
in this case it wasnt true, the stated stock length was 130cm, yet the actual was 150cm..i checked the site, it states "stock length 130cm"

Marwan, you are absolutely correct......stock length is stock length.:martial

Never had size issues before while purchasing guns.........be it Euro or US....but this is a bit questionable..........so let's hear it from the rest of the sea sniper club members.

Agreed. If it stated a stock length of 130cm, than 130cm it should be. Chris from Sea Sniper and I have a very good mutual friend (who happens to help Chris in the shop) so I will ask and report back here to the thread.

you know what makes it even more confusing, if you look at the shaft length of the reefpro130, its approx. 155-160cm which ties in perfectly with a 110-115cm gun (by euro standards) sounds too short for a 130 gun (should be 170-180cm) I think

The SS model length is the length in centimeters between the back of the band slot and front of the trigger mech. So,... the 130 model should indeed be 150cm overall. :head

I mentioned this quite a while ago, the webmaster fixed it, and I distinctly recall verifying that it was corrected. Just called the webmaster up and as far as we can figure - somewhere along the way, the server must have reverted to a back-up version since the page has remained untouched since. Really crappy situation and I'm sure both sides wish it never happened...


On a side note, the 130cm is a surprisingly effective size that is very versatile for its length! I originally thought it'd be way too long for use in murky conditions & kelp, but turned out to be quite nice.



However you work it out with Sea Sniper, I'm sure you'll be happy with the performance. My first SS euro gun was a 110. While the 110 is a great model, if I had one gun... it would be a 130 version so I could use it in open water as well as the kelp! :martial

Of course, I'll be using the Marwan solution - just get one of each. rofl


The shaft lengths Marwan mentioned - one of the reasons that euros traditionally have the "40cm longer than barrel length" rule is to counteract the sag. Picasso actually uses 50cm! The extra overhang on a supported shaft(like railguns or wood guns) just add extra drag when tracking. Also, since it's not used to counteract sag, the front section lists downwards slightly. The SeaSnipers have a shorter overhang to find a balance between aiming ease and reducing unnecessary overhang.

On a similar note - with larger wooden guns (like Wongs, SeaSniper Customs, Alexanders, Merlos, etc), most strive to have the threading for the shaft start right past the muzzle. Less overhang equates to quicker tracking and greater efficiency. Riffes don't follow this mentality because their slip-tip design requires a considerable amount of overhang. Wong, Mori, Kitto, & Aimrite slip-tips don't have this "issue".

I just received word form Chris at Sea Sniper ……he was kind enough to suggest a solution as he admitted the mistake ……which in this case, as Marwan mentioned :t, the stock length was supposed to be 150 cm and not 130.

Its people like Chris who make this industry professional and get us deeper & deeper in to spearfishing…..leaving behind our wives & children :crutchfor the thrill of catching fish….. I don’t know where this is going but THANKS Chris….very proud to have joined the Sea Sniper club :friday.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE


Chris at Sea Sniper & Brent at Kayak Fishing Supplies (where the gun was originally purchased) were kind enough to give me the opportunity to purchase the Reef Pro 110 and deduct $390 from it……Wow :friday…it couldn’t have been better…This Is Customer Service.

Also, Chris has updated his site (Sea Sniper) so all the dimensions of the Reef Pro series are 100% correct…no argument there.:t
