Seafood population depleted by 2048

It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
My brother-in-law is a commercial fisherman on Lake Michigan and he told me that this has been the worst year ever. He's actually been living off of his savings since March and still puts in 12+ hour days, year round, for next to nothing. He gives it two more months before he has to hang it up and get a new job. Just 5 years ago he was doing pretty well, now the nets are empty.

After talking with the DNR, who have sample nets set every 10' from the shore out to 300', it looks like the only thing they keep bringing up are invasive species, like zebra and quaga mussels, and little else. Some of their nets are so full of these little bastards that the boat winches can barely bring them up. Too bad you can't use them for something but they are so small, and full of toxins, that even the ducks who eat them are dying.

The sport fisherman have had two banner years of trout/salmon fishing out on the lake because the fish are all SO hungry due to the base levels of food being taken out of the food chain by the invasive. A couple more years and there won't be anything left for them to fish for.

One sad thing is that, by overfishing, fishermen in some countries are actually killing the goose of the golden egg. Its what happened with the whalers, and still some refuse to learn.

Its sad that some people still see this as a source of never ending supply. Thats why I cant see the need in taking more than what you are actually going to use. I've been in a situation where I made a guy put back shelvish they took from rocks in the place we go on holiday every year, this guy carried his baby in one of those rucksack thingies and the bottom of it was filled with shelvish he also had a plastic shopping bag full of the things at 5 per person and being only 3 in his group that meant he went over the limit by about 30. If everybody did this and we include the commercial guys I cant see how its not going to destroy our marine resources.
We should all take a stance of no acceptance when it comes to poaching and other situations we can control in such a way, it wont make much of a difference in the long run but the more people who do it the more people will be informed and that is the big rotten apple I think, lack of information. O and greed of coarse...

Oh, yes, it can and will make a difference if more people take a stance as you suggests. I know that spearfishing is not the cause of the problem, but still there is no need to take more than what you are actually going to use. I have had many discussions with fellow spearos that I've seen killing a beatiful fish (for example, a tarpon or a barracuda) just for the sake of having their picture taken with their prey, and then throw the dead fish back in the water. I suggest that, instead of spending one thousand dollars or more in a new Wong, buy and underwater camera and then one can "shoot" at all the fish we want and save their pictures forever. Maybe we can even win a prize with it :)

So shall we start now and make the coming year, a year of standing up for our watery world. If we see someone poaching or taking more than what they should, ask them politely to put it back and explain your reasons to them for asking, as to educate them. If they dont wana, punch em in the nose and put it back for them!
