Set-up?

Hi all! i'm new to spearfishing, i dont even have an entire kit yet, just a pair of fins and goggles. i think i know which snorkle i want to get, and which wet suit i want to get too. i'm still looking around at different threads for what kind of gun though. i know it may sound vain or booj, but i'm pretty partial to wooden guns. i think they look old school and natural and clean.. lol. any suggestions on size? also, what kind of set up do i do? i've noticed some guns come with reels already on, if a gun doesnt have one, then do i just buy a reel and attach it? and if i attached a reel, would i need to set up the rigging for "break away"? i understand these are probably super basic questions to some of you more experienced spearos out there, but i am the first in my family, and out of all my friends, to ever try spearfishing. so i'm pretty lost.

Go to a local freedive/spearfishing shop, and/or find a local spearfishing club, attend a meeting and talk to people. There are several clubs near you. Gear is different all over the world so the best thing is to talk to local spearos. I don't know what freedive shops are local to you but don't go to a big chain sporting goods store as anyone working there will be marginally knowledgable about spearfishing at best and then only by scuba. Find a store that specializes in freediving/spearing, even if it means driving an hour or two. Freedive and Spear in Hermosa Beach is great but there are a few other shops south of there that I have not visited.
