hello i was wandering how i should set up my gear for spearfishing , i have been hunting in very shallow water 5-8ft and been on the surface constantly so i havent been using a SMB do i still need one , would i be better using a weight belt i have one but have not used it yet am i better with or with or with out ? also im using a sola 5mm x 3mm is this okay or do i need thicker ? would you advise useing a hood ? , i would also be very greatful for any more tips tecniques or loation in guernsey

Hi mate I would recommend using a smb all the time, because it notifies others (not just boats but swimmers also) about your presence but it also allows you to attach a stringer (bar with sharpened point and cord attached) to the smb and carry your fish on it. I personally attatch the float line (coming from the float) to the handle of the gun, this allows you to retrieve your gun if you drop it but also if you shoot a fish in the belly or shoot mullet you can let go of the gun which enables the fish to swim away with it, but it reduces the risk of the spear ripping out of the fish.

The wetsuit sounds fine for the warmer months but I you start going later on in the year you may want to increase, this applies to the uk anyway. A weight belt is also recommended as it allows you to wait on the bottom in weed which is the best way to get fish. Start with around 7kg then increase/decrease from there.
